Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate II in this position will be involved in research centered on the epithelial biology of lung repair and regeneration after injury and during aging. Our laboratory is also engaged in developing drugs or molecular tools to favorably regulate the repair process and prevent fibrosis. Current projects in the lab focus on understanding the impact of age on alveolar repair in normal and diseased human lungs (Cohen et al. BioRxiv 2023, Jourdan Le Saux et al. Am J Res Cell Mol Bio 2024). The position will involve acquiring skills in culturing lung slices for in vitro assays, isolating primary cells from human lungs and their subsequent analysis by flow cytometry. The incumbent in this position will also manage and accurately maintain mouse strains, which including mouse genotyping and testing transgenic mouse lines. Collectively, this position should provide a solid foundation for subsequent training at a graduate school level.

This position will be working directly under Dr. Hal Chapman at the Chapman Lab the Parnassus campus University of California San Francisco.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Program includes the UCSF Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine division (based at the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites), the Pulmonary and Critical Care divisions of the San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and at UCSF's Mission Bay campus. Each emphasizes different aspects of care for patients with lung disease and lung disease research. The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine have a long history of providing outstanding clinical care, performing innovative research and training academic scientists and physicians. We currently have active, well-funded clinical, translational and basic research programs in lung development, international lung health, pulmonary immunology, genetics of pulmonary and allergic diseases, lung transplantation, microbial pathogenesis, airway diseases, acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary malignancies and pulmonary health disparities. Our large, NIH training grant has been continuously funded since 1966. Nearly a quarter of all academic pulmonologists in the United States have trained at UCSF. This combined unit includes: 7 outpatient clinics, 4 inpatient services, a pulmonary function diagnostic center, 15 independent wet labs, 4 independent research service cores, 6 independent clinical research units, one specialty destination program, and the Nina Ireland Program in Lung Health focusing on philanthropic activities.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Knowledge of and experience in cell/molecular biology as well as mouse handling, including experience in cell culture, immunoprecipitation, and immunostaining.
  • Willingness and ability to work with small animals/mice
  • Computer skills at the level of using spreadsheet programs
  • Careful attention to detail. Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in handling and working with mice, including
  • anesthesia, ear tagging, intratracheal and peritoneal injections, and euthanasia.
  • Computer skills at the level of using spreadsheet programs
  • Sound quantitative skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated proficiency in mammalian cell culture and primary cell isolation from animal tissue techniques including maintenance of cell lines, transfection techniques, isolation of RNA and DNA
  • Demonstrated proficiency in biochemical techniques such as ELISA, protein measurements, and collagen assays.
  • Familiarity with Flow Cytometry
