I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Plans, prepares, and delivers a prescribed course of radiation to patient. Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient-identification prior to treatment. Explains procedure to patient as means of communication during treatment. Answers questions and reassures patient. Reinforces physician's advice to patient regarding reactions to treatment and to care. Prepares room and equipment for patient according to chart specifications for field size, distance, time, and the like.

2. Administers radiation therapy treatments observing radiation safety measures for patients and personnel. Transfers patient safety to treatment table, giving special care to catheters, I.V.'s, and the like.

3. Monitors patient and equipment during treatment. Maintains patient markings. Maintains simulation room. Assists Radiation (Oncologist) and Physicist in simulation of patients prior to radiation treatments. Observes patient for unusual reactions and reports to supervisor or others. Assists in follow-up and clinical examinations of patient.

4. Maintains departmental records. Updates patient charts as required. Maintains records of daily treatment. Maintains separate files on all therapy patients. Schedules patient appointments.

5. Assists in care and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies. Maintains work area in clean, orderly and safe condition. Maintains equipment in good working order; makes minor repairs as necessary. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor or others. Initiates requisitions for supplies as needed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1. Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy.

2. If not registered upon hire, the employee will have 1 year to obtain certification as a condition of continued employment.

3. Must possess a valid Massachusetts license in Radiation Therapy.

Preferred:

1. Graduate of CAHEA-approved Radiation Therapy Technology Program.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1. Demonstrated clinical knowledge.

2. Effective verbal and written communication skill.

3. Excellent customer service skills and ability to work cooperatively with all members of the healthcare team.
