PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Concert Manager manages and provides logistical support for all performances of the Scripps College Music Department.The duties include stage managing, producing posters and programs, coordinating concert schedules, negotiating with guest artists, and working closely with performers (faculty, staff, and students) from the Claremont Colleges and guest artists.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages all logistics for Scripps College Music Department concert events at the Performing Arts Center (Garrison Theater and Boone Recital Hall) including faculty performances, Junior & Senior recitals of student Music majors, and the Bessie Bartlett Frankel Chamber Music Festival:
    • stage managing
    • backstage support for performers
    • coordinating student assistants
    • produce and manage archival audio recordings
  • Manages the logistics for all Friday Noon Concerts in Balch Auditorium (see above).
  • Coordinates the Concert Calendar for the upcoming academic year including Friday Noon Concert Series, student and faculty recitals, and the Joint Music Program choral and orchestral concerts.
  • Coordinates printing, mailings, and postings of the Music Department's Fall and Spring concert calendar posters.
  • Produces and coordinates the printing of programs for all music department concerts including faculty recitals and Junior/Senior recitals of student Music majors.
  • Coordinates performance and rehearsal schedules for music department concerts, including recitals.
  • Researches, contacts, and contracts with a professional chamber music ensemble to play in the annual Bessie Bartlett Frankel Chamber Music Festival.Serves as the contact person for the ensemble while they are in Claremont (arranges transportation, lodging, miscellaneous necessities).
  • Provides publicity to various constituencies (e.g. newspapers, social media).
  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.
  • Active support for the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • A thorough knowledge of classical music repertoire including composers' names and common genres.
  • Experience with stage managing for classical music performances, particularly in higher education settings.
  • Ability to work with computer programs that produce concert posters and programs.Ability to format and edit programs with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with faculty, staff, students, and guest artists to coordinate concerts, rehearsals, and programs.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in music, or a combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job.

1-2 years of previous, relevant experience is required.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a regular status, part-time (15 hours per week), non-exempt, non-benefits eligible position.Hours may vary due to needs of the department.The schedule is flexible, but the position requires hours most Fridays (during the day) and during some evenings and/or weekends to accommodate rehearsals, recitals, and concerts as needed.

Hourly rate range: $20.00-24.50. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None.
