Job Summary

This position will provide quality patient care before, during and after radiologic examinations in various locations including but not limited to the Main Hospital, Ambulatory Care Center and/or satellite facilities as necessary.

The Radiology Assistant plays a key role in providing support for the technologists, ensuring patients have received the proper exam prep, are transported to and from Radiology in comfort with proper medical support, and are observed while on the exam table. This position will assist the technologists with data entry using various computer systems as well as help with maintaining equipment. Incumbent will answer phone lines in respective work area and patient care area.

The Radiology Assistant will facilitate patient transport services and provide other support as needed. The incumbent works independently, and work is referred to the supervisor when standard procedures or processes do not apply.

The individual must perform calmly in stressful situations and interact with radiologists, clinicians, technologists and peers in a cooperative, harmonious manner for maximum effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) CPR Certification required.
  • Ability to transport patients within a hospital setting.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the use of proper body mechanics when lifting and transporting patients and moving radiology equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard keyboard, ability to input/retrieve data accurately. Required to accurately enter and retrieve patient data from the Hospital Information System (IS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) to include but not limited to patient demographic and exam information, verification, status, change and amendment.
  • Good general understanding of basic Radiology procedures and knowledge of Radiology equipment, supplies and drugs.
  • Ability to work safely in an area with ionizing radiation and/or high magnetic field.
  • Ability to work in a very cool environment (computer area).
  • Ability to move and manipulate equipment with knobs and switches.
  • Ability to move supply boxes and equipment up to 45 pounds.
  • Ability to move, manipulate and transfer patients weighing up to 400 pounds on/to/from exam table, with assistance as needed.
  • Ability to move from location to location throughout the hospital and other campus (satellite) locations.
  • Ability and knowledge to ensure safety of patient, before, during and after transport.
  • Should have a basic understanding of medical terminology or work in related field.
  • Must be able to work quickly, accurately under pressure. Must be able to work/communicate with co-workers at all levels under very stressful conditions.
  • Ability to maintain work effectiveness when faced with deadlines, changing priorities, fast-paced work environment, and conflicting demands from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to act diplomatically and exhibit a courteous manner to patients and medical staff, and university personnel at all levels while performing work duties. Ability to present a professional image and maintain composure when dealing with the public and staff using reason and logic.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, co-workers and other departments. Ability to function effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience performing related tasks preferred.
  • Experience transporting patients within a hospital setting.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work variable hours, alternate shifts, and occasional overtime to provide coverage as needed for sick leave, staffing shortages, etc.
