Discharge Pharmacy Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, the pharmacist supervisor is responsible for the management and supervision of the daily activities of the staff for activities and processes designed to provide efficient medication distribution, customer service, and appropriate clinical services. Supervisory activities include the review and prioritization of daily workload, serving as the primary resource for staff on clinical and administrative issues, and coordination of pharmacy functions with other departments/sections to ensure optimal patient care and interdepartmental communication. Ensures appropriate training, education, and competency of pharmacy staff. Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates pharmacy staff. Ensures compliance with all Federal and State regulations, and departmental policies. Develops and implements sustainable policies and procedures, provides oversight of payroll and scheduling, and provides staffing support as necessary.

Essential Functions:
  • Coordinates and works with other hospital colleagues (e.g. physician, nursing, ancillary staff, etc.) to assist in defining policies and procedures governing daily pharmacy practice in coordination with the management/leadership team(s) and in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards, and state and federal laws. Attends or participates in other programs, committees, inservice meetings and functions required by the pharmacy department. Delivers positive customer service and follow up on customer and employee issues/complaints. (40%)
  • Develops and implements work schedules and assignments to ensure appropriate staffing. As needed, finds coverage during periods of high volume, staff shortages and emergencies. Assures that approved work schedule is posted in a timely manner. Monitors daily staff attendance to assure compliance with organizational and departmental policy. As necessary due to employee absence, redirects work schedule assignments to assure that critical positions are staffed. Assists with the completion of the hiring and disciplinary paperwork with documentation. (20%)
  • Actively identifies problems and opportunities for improvement; identifies appropriate solution and involves others in the implementation process. Recognizes positive behavior and contributions to the organization using praise, appreciation, and rewards. Identifies training and staff development needs of employees and ensures appropriate training provided and competency is maintained. Initiates formal/informal activities with employees to develop departmental cohesion and collegiality. (20%)
  • Ensures all legal and professional pharmacy requirements are adhered to and appropriate documentation is maintained. Interprets, verifies, and clarifies orders for all types of medications as needed. Oversees preparation of compounded medications and ensures all record keeping requirements are maintained per board of pharmacy rules and regulations. (20%)

Education:
  • Doctorate Degree BPharm or PharmD, with PharmD preferred Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years pharmacy experience, Required and
  • 4-6 years pharmacy experience preferred and
  • previous managerial or leadership experience preferred and
  • Applicable PGY2 Residency will count towards managerial experience.

Licenses:
  • PHA-Licensed Pharmacist - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required and
  • BCPS-Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist - BPS - Board of Pharmacy Specialties
  • PBID-Pharmacy Based Immunization Delivery - BPS - Board of Pharmacy Specialties
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association
  • ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association
  • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to interact with other members of the healthcare team and with pharmacy leadership
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of pharmacy
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacy related state and federal laws
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports
  • Ability to demonstrate accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate sound problem solving/decision making skills with practical, efficient, economical, and reasonable solutions
  • Broad pharmacotherapy knowledge for managing patient medication therapy needs
  • Ability to provide input into the vision and development of pharmacy services
