The Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory seeks a Career Track Assistant Research Professor to assist in laboratory operations and improving research processes for the UA Space Astrophysics lab (UASAL). UASAL performs a range of mission critical operations for space instrumentation and adaptive optics research. UASAL equipment includes >2000 sq feet of ISO7 cleanrooms, a 2-meter long space-simulation vacuum chamber capable of 1e-8 torr, as well as class III and IV lasers, novel coronagraphic and MEMS devices. UASAL is a hands-on, test driven and software development intensive lab that seeks to train all students in best practices of version control, documentation, and automated software and hardware testing. UASAL is also co-investigator lab in the TIMESTEP program which mentors undergraduates in research best practices and places them in local startups. Additionally, UASAL collaborates closely with UA fabrication facilities including the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab, the University of Arizona Nano Fabrication Center, the Imaging Technology Laboratory, and the Arizona Space Institute. The new hire would be encouraged to carry out their own independent research program and deepen collaboration with these campus stakeholders as well as local industry.
