DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 15, 2025 (Classes begin August 20, 2025)

JOB DESCRIPTION: A full-time, 9-month, tenure track, benefits-eligible position. The primary assignment is the teaching of undergraduate and graduate music theory courses. Potential to teach individual composition lessons. Other teaching and/or service responsibilities may include coordinating the music theory area, supervising doctoral research documents, and/or supervising Graduate Assistants. Assignments will be made according to the needs of the program, the School of Music, and the abilities of the candidate. Participation in School of Music activities, recruitment and retention of students, and faculty governance are required. Research/Creative Activity appropriate for establishing and maintaining a national or international reputation as a scholar of music theory is required. Active participation in scholarly and professional organizations in the field is expected.

The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Music Therapy Program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association, and the Music Education Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the West Virginia Department of Education.

The College of Creative Arts and Media has an enrollment of over 2,000 students and consists of four professionally accredited and nationally recognized Schools of Art & Design, Media & Communications, Music, and Theatre & Dance. Each School offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees addressing such fields as the creative and performing arts, advertising and communications, arts education and scholarship, design disciplines, journalism, marketing and public relations, museum studies, the recording industry, theatre technology, and the intersection of art and health.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must be prepared to teach all levels of music theory courses, including those for undergraduate through doctoral students. The candidate must have a minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience or equivalent at the college level in the music theory field. Interest in repertoires and analytical strategies beyond the Western canon, including commercial music, is preferred. A master's degree in either Music Theory or Music Theory and Composition is required; Doctorate is preferred. The School of Music seeks a candidate who will demonstrate exemplary communication skills, collegiality, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the University.
