Laboratory Supervisor

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Laboratory Supervisor to join our Construction Services team in Asheville, North Carolina. Are you ready to contribute your experience and knowledge to meaningful projects? Join us at S&ME!

As the Laboratory Supervisor, you will be responsible for managing lab personnel, overseeing daily lab activities and projects, and ensuring the quality and safety of laboratory operations within a geographic or technical service area. The role involves scheduling assignments, maintaining equipment, helping to coordinate training and certifications, and supporting business development efforts. This position balances team leadership with a higher personal utilization goal, emphasizing client relations, quality assurance, and operational efficiency. In addition to the laboratory responsibilities, you will also be needed to participate and add value to the construction services and geotechnical team through field and project management roles.

Your Day-to-Day:



  • Team Supervision: Direct and oversee lab staff in testing, equipment maintenance, calibrations, and daily operations.
  • Project Management: Manage dynamic Construction Materials Testing and Special Inspection projects of varying scales, providing your technical expertise, and overseeing every phase, including proposal development, budgeting, scheduling, report delivery, and project deadlines.
  • Field Work: Both Geotechnical and Construction Services

    • Coordination of field explorations, field logging of soil samples, performing engineering calculations/design, preparation of proposals and reports, and project and client support.
    • Testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout on construction projects for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications.
    • Review of civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation of field site visits and observations.
    • Prepare documentation of (and mentor staff in performing) field activities, observations, and testing on construction projects, and their conformance with (or deviation from) project plans and specifications.


  • Scheduling & Coordination: Manage staff schedules and collaborate with Field Supervisors and Project Managers on project progress.
  • Training & Certification: Train employees on lab processes and ensure staff maintain certifications for technical development.
  • Quality & Safety: Lead safety efforts, maintain equipment standards, and uphold quality protocols per AASHTO requirements.
  • Client & Business Development: Support client pursuits through proposal preparation, cross-selling services, and maintaining a positive company image. This includes the development of relationships with peers in the local engineering and construction communities through participation in local professional organizations.



What You Bring:



  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering or other closely related technical field, a plus
  • A minimum of 2 years combined experience in geotechnical and construction materials testing and a supervisory, management, or leadership role
  • Proficiency with computer technology and mechanical testing equipment



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
