JOB SUMMARY SEIU 73

The Special Procedures Technician II operates telecobalt and telecesium therapy units to give radiation treatment to patients with cancer. Responsible for daily start-up and checking of equipment, safety monitors, interlocks, and patient monitors. Performs basic calculations and associated clerical functions.


Typical Duties

* Records treatment given in each patient's chart.

* Assists physicians while setting-up patients treatment.

* Set-up patients already marked by physician.

* Attends to patient needs while awaiting treatments.

* Watches patients from TV Monitor while under treatment.

* Calls transportation for patients to be picked-up and taken back to ward.

* Makes a daily log of all patients given different anatomic location per day and totaled at the end of the month.

* Develops portal films.

* File x-rays and portal films.

* Performs basic calculations.

Minimum Qualifications
* Completion of American Medical Association approved School of Radiologic Technology
* Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)
* Active license by the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety
* Eligible or certified in Radiation Therapy
* Certified training required and compliance with Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IDNS obtain 12 units of continuing education each year of license
* Extreme knowledge of anatomy, positioning, physics, radioisotopes, electricity and radiobiology of patient's psychology; of division policies and procedures
* Thorough knowledge of basic dosimetry functions

* Thorough knowledge of basic dosimetry functions
* Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
* Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
