Job Summary

The Ernst Lab, in the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine, at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is hiring a Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) to work as part of a research team investigating mechanisms of immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially myeloid cell differentiation and trafficking, and antigen-specific T cell responses in tissues. The successful candidate must show documented proficiency in BSL2 and BSL3 biosafety, rodent handling and tissue harvest techniques, aseptic technique, and cellular and molecular immunology techniques including primary cell isolation, flow cytometry, and functional cell assays, as well as recombinant DNA technologies. Duties will include standard and repetitive technical laboratory procedures.

The job will involve the ability to stand and walk for extended period during the work hours which is necessary to perform lab duties.

The Division of Experimental Medicine is a translational, wet lab research unit comprised of 8 immunological research groups consisting of 10 faculty members and 65+ staff, trainees, and post-docs. Our labs use cutting edge technologies to answer clinically important questions about host-pathogen interactions across globally devastating infectious diseases, including HIV, Malaria, SARS-CoV-2, and Tuberculosis.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The mission of the Division of Experimental Medicine, based at the San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) Medical Center, is to understand the human immune system so that lifesaving therapies and vaccines can be developed to protect against chronic infectious diseases of global importance, such as HIV/AIDS; and to establish a training environment that fosters patient-oriented research, both here and abroad.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Molecular biology, Microbiology and / or Immunology research or laboratory background
  • Knowledge of various procedures and laboratory techniques, such as: BSL2 / BSL3 biosafety experience, rodent research techniques (euthanasia, tissue harvest, injections, genotyping and phenotyping), microscopy, sterile procedure, cell culture, immunology techniques (flow cytometry / FACS, ELISA), recombinant DNA techniques, reagent preparation, protein analysis by immunoblot, RNA isolation and qRT-PCR
  • Proficiency in various computer programs and proven ability to quickly learn and optimize new programs
  • Experience in shipping and handling of biohazard agents
  • Must be open to working in ABSL3 setting
  • Ability to adapt and use good judgment when making decisions
  • Ability to work with, and train staff of wide range of educational backgrounds
  • Ability to prioritize work and delegate responsibility and tasks appropriately

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum two years' post-graduation laboratory research experience in microbiology and / or immunology
  • Experience in biocontainment (Biosafety Level 3 and Animal Biosafety Level 3) facility
  • Certification in rodent handling
