Minimum Qualifications
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Kinesiology or related discipline; Academic leadership experience in higher education; Kinesiology or related curriculum and program planning experience; Familiarity with COAES ( ACSM) and/or CASCE ( NSCA) accreditation.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the Department of Kinesiology is seeking a Chair with experience in strategic planning and budgeting, advocacy for mentoring of faculty, staff and students, support and guidance for impactful research and teaching initiatives and success in facilitating collaboration and consensus building.

Description of the Department or Unit
The newly created Department of Kinesiology (effective July 2025; formerly the Department of Public Health & Exercise Science) at Appalachian State University comprises nationally accredited and recognized programs including a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Kinesiology (formerly Exercise Science). The Kinesiology graduate program at App State has a long history of success and prestige in strength & conditioning and clinical exercise physiology. The department features state of the art laboratories and supports faculty with diverse research and practice backgrounds. This inaugural chair position is a significant milestone in the history of Exercise Science (Kinesiology) at App State as it marks the transition into an independent , stand-alone department.
Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the academic leader and facilitate the establishment of strategic initiatives;
- Lead administrative team of program directors;
- Oversee program curricula and degree programs relevant to Department's Mission;
- Pursue additional resources (e.g., internal and external funding) to expand capacity for research, teaching and community collaboration;
- Supervise full- and part-time faculty, administrative assistants and affiliated faculty members;
- Work closely and effectively with partners across the College and University;
- Advocate effectively on behalf of the Department;
- Build and sustain community partnerships and collaborations;
- Contribute to teaching in the Department as needed;
- Perform other duties associated with Chair service as indicated in the Academic Affairs Standard Operating Procedures and Faculty Handbook

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD Consideration: No ABD consideration (see desc. below)
ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
