Primary Purpose of the Position
As a leader in nursing education, the Winston-Salem State University Division of Nursing is committed to providing diverse populations with a transformative educational experience rooted in the HBCU traditions. The Division of Nursing is dedicated to providing excellent, accessible, and responsive programs at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. Graduates are prepared to be leaders in assuring health equity of underserved individuals and communities; providing compassionate, evidence-based, and culturally responsive care; and educating our next generation of nurses.

Faculty in the Division of Nursing seek full-time, 12 month Clinical Track Instructor/ Assistant Professor of Nursing in the School of Health Sciences. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate nursing courses with concentration in Adult health or any nursing specialties (Maternity, Mental or Child). In addition to teaching and facilitating the application of nursing theories, principles, and skill competencies, the candidate will serve as a faculty/student advisor and mentor, and coach students inside and outside of the classroom. Additionally, the successful candidate will facilitate presentations at well-respected professional conferences and engage in scholarship with interdisciplinary teams. The successful candidate must participate in departmental, School, and university service as well as engage in service related to the nursing profession and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County communities.

Faculty in the Division of Nursing seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching nursing theory and clinical to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The following qualifications and skills are required for this position:

  • Candidate must have a minimum of a Graduate Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Candidates must hold a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina or have eligibility to obtain a North Carolina Registered Nurse license.
  • Must have a minimum of two years clinical experience in adult health/medical-surgical/specialty nursing and one calendar years teaching experience, including hybrid and/or on-line, in a college or university setting.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to leverage various technologies that engage students in the learning process.
  • Candidates must be proficient in test construction using NCLEX blueprint, statistical analysis, and instructional reinforcement to achieve learning outcomes.
  • The successful candidate must be a clinical expert and possess effective communication and assessment skills.
  • Must provide evidence of the ability to mentor and support undergraduate students in scholarly experiences and/or engage students in study aboard, internship opportunities, or community service learning.

Preferred candidates must exhibit the ability to engage in interprofessional teaching, learning, and scholarship/research collaboration with the broader constituencies. Candidates must show a commitment to liberal education, and social determinants of health. The successful candidate must exemplify commitment to their own professional growth and development and engage in professional organizations and conferences. We welcome candidates who are proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Canvas, and Banner platforms.
Required License or Certification
Current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina is required (or ability to obtain licensure). If an Advanced Practice Nurse, candidate must have national certification.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
Faculty in the Division of Nursing seeks a committed and engaged faculty member who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising

  • The successful candidate will teach undergraduate nursing courses either face-to-face, hybrid, or online.
  • General teaching responsibilities include both didactic and clinical/lab/simulation instruction, primarily teaching curriculum content and clinical related to adult health/specialty at the undergraduate level.
  • The faculty will advise and mentor students regarding academic matters and help foster a student-centered learning environment.
  • The successful candidate must construct detailed course syllabi.
  • The ideal candidate will facilitate high quality, engaging instruction.
  • The ideal candidate will leverage various technologies (e.g., Canvas, EAB Navigate) to communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes.
  • The successful candidate must engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.


Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • The ideal candidate must have activities that systematically advanced the teaching, research, and practice of nursing.
  • The ideal candidate must facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national and international professional conferences, and meetings within the discipline and/or interprofessional field.
  • The ideal candidate must collaborate with interdisciplinary and interprofessional teams to procure and conduct sponsored scholarship and research.

University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement

  • Meet with the course coordinator, area coordinator, and chairperson regularly and as requested.
  • Attend consistently departmental and College meetings.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on School and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions related to Nursing or healthcare.
