The Dakota County Transportation Department is currently recruiting to fill two full-time temporary (3-4 months) positions in the Traffic unit. These temporary positions are a great opportunity for students to explore their interest and gain work experience in technical fields like Construction Management, Traffic, Electrical, and Survey.

Staff assigned to the traffic data collection position will perform traffic counts collection throughout the County using electronic and mechanical traffic counters and assists with project planning and administration. We are filling 1 position in the traffic unit.

Staff assigned to the traffic roadway signing positions will assist in making and installing roadway signs, operating equipment, and assisting signal traffic personnel as directed. We are filling 1 openings in the traffic sign and signal unit.

The positions require the ability to work a flexible schedule which may include early morning or evening hours to meet project deadlines. The positions are responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled to skilled tasks.


Minimum Qualifications

* High School graduate or equivalent (G.E.D.) by the start date of the position.
AND
* Valid driver's license

Preferred, but not required, education or experience beyond minimum qualifications:
* College or technical school coursework in areas of Traffic, Construction Management, Traffic, Electrical, Survey or Engineering fields
* Direct work experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word or similar computer software
* Previous roadway traffic or construction experience
* Project management skills


Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

1. Perform right of way maintenance work along roadways: pavement marking and installing temporary traffic control signs for traffic management.
2. Fabricate roadway signs and install along roadways.
3. Independently collect traffic counts: install and remove traffic counters, maintain and organize equipment, and enter traffic data in to software programs.
4. Safely work within roadways to accomplish work.
5. Clean and organize equipment, report broken equipment to supervisor
6. Complete traffic study engineering work in the office or field as requested.
7. Assist traffic department as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties 1 - 5 are essential functions as well as regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment

* Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Office--Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and ability to operate computer systems.
* Ability and strong interest to learn new tasks quickly.
* Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
* Ability to work independently organizing and managing work tasks
* Ability to interpret roadway maps.
* Ability and skill to use hand tools and operate small to heavy size equipment.
* Must be reliable with consistent performance and attendance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 20% inside, 80% outside. Must be able to perform the following on an occasional to frequent basis; sitting, walking, balancing, bending/stooping, turning/twisting, low-level position, climbing, reaching forward/overhead/low-level, grasping, fingering bending/twisting arms, and push/pulling. Positions requires lifting 0 to 10 pounds on a frequent basis, 11 to 30 pounds (traffic counting position) or 50 pounds (pavement marking / signing areas) of force occasionally, 51 to 100 pounds is rare and should be done as a team lift. Exposures may include, but are not limited to, changing weather conditions, roadway traffic and construction equipment on roads or constructions projects, dust, dirt, paint, solvents, cleaners, exhaust and noise. Driving is required for this position and staff must have the ability to use a variety of equipment including but not limited to: post puller and post pounder, small hand tools, power and larger hand tools, pressure washer, roadway cones/barrels, jackhammer, full bucket of paint, small hand tools, traffic counter boxes, tubes, iPad, personal computer, printers, telephone, cellular phone, calculator, copy machine, video equipment, and personal safety equipment. Staff specifically assigned to the Traffic Service Unit may also be asked to use: light and heavy equipment including long line highway striper, bucket truck, or sign truck; however, as a temporary staff member they are NOT required to operate this equipment.
