Job Summary

Denver Health Medical Center has an opening for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Gastroenterology Division. Under the direction of a physician, performs professional medical work in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of patients according to statutory limitations. Examines and diagnoses patients and develops treatment plans. Provides treatment for illnesses, emergencies, follow up, and screening and testing. Performs testing, referral to physicians as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs administrative procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols and available equipment. May perform administrative support functions as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs direct patient care examining, diagnosing and analyzing the total patient health condition, developing short and long term patient care goals and prescribing treatment according to statutory limitation and under the direction of a physician. (60%)
  • Completes required documentation legibly, thoroughly and in a timely manner. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files and records. (10%)
  • Orders and administers appropriate medications within the limits of the appropriate statutory limitations or refers patient to a caregiver in a specialty area. Initiates, performs or directs other nurses to perform screenings and diagnostic tests. (5%)
  • Participates as a preceptor for nurse practitioner/PA students and APP residents. (5%)
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards. (5%)
  • Attends administrative staff meetings to present clinical concerns. Utilizes the principles and practices of effective and persuasive communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies. (5%)
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, receiving current literature, and attending inservice meetings and workshops. Attends, participated in, and contributes to in-services, education, and staff training sessions to maintain/increase skills and teach others. (10%)

Education:

  • Master's Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years related clinical experience Required

Licenses:

  • NP or PA License Required
  • NP or PA Board Certification Required
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nursing principals and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community resources for appropriate procedures.
  • Knowledge of pediatric nursing techniques and methods.
  • Skill in medical instrument and laboratory equipment use.
  • Skill in applying clinical service practices.
  • Physical health assessment skills.
  • Skill in utilizing the principles and practices of effective and persuasive communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies.
  • Skill in obtaining information from patients, calming and reassuring patients and motivating patients to accept treatments.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in selecting proper treatment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
  • Computer skills required.
