What You'll Do
The Engineering Technician plays a critical role within the County's Traffic Engineering Team. The main responsibilities include traffic safety assessments and studies, managing/aiding in the County traffic count program, completing traffic signal designs and timing plans, and assisting the Traffic Engineering team on workload. Learning opportunities and potential for career growth will be provided. The Engineering Technician will be mentored and guided by other technicians and engineers within the group.

Minimum Qualifications

* Associate in Civil Engineering Technology, Land Surveying or closely related field AND One year of related highway construction, traffic safety, or engineering work experience.
OR
* One year of specialized or technical training beyond high school in an engineering related field AND Two years of related highway construction, traffic safety, or engineering work experience.
OR
* A combination of education and experience directly related to highway construction, traffic safety, or engineering which equals or exceed 3 years.
AND
* Valid Driver's License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS BEYOND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Engineer in Training Certification
* Engineering Internship experience with a City, County or State agency.


Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions:

  1. Manage the County traffic count program including annual count data and intersection turning movement counts. May include setting traffic counting equipment.
  2. Conduct safety assessments by evaluating crash data, developing crash diagrams, and developing improvement recommendations.
  3. Perform field reviews, collect and analyze data, and prepare traffic engineering reports.
  4. Assist with special funds applications.
  5. Prepare traffic signal plans, including traffic signing, striping, workzone traffic control and detours.
  6. Assist with preparation and maintenance of signal timing data.
  7. Respond to internal and external stakeholder inquiries.
  8. Provide input to improve efficiency and effectiveness of systems and protocols when fully understood.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment

  • Basic knowledge of traffic engineering practices and principles.
  • Basic knowledge of signal timing, including Synchro and central system softwares.
  • Working knowledge of computers, including AutoCad and Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Skill in the use of databases, spreadsheets, and other office software.
  • Ability to independently problem solve.
  • Basic knowledge of federal and state highway design and traffic engineering standards, rules, and practices.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering maps and records, drafting nomenclature, and symbols.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationship with staff, public, officials, and other professionals.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while working on multiple assignments.

Work Experience
80% inside, 20% outside. Must be able to perform the following on an occasional to frequent basis; sitting, walking, balancing, bending/stooping, turning/twisting, low-level position, reaching forward/ low-level, grasping, keying, and bending/twisting arms. Position requires lifting 0 to 10 pounds on a frequent basis and 11 to 30 pounds of force occasionally. Exposures may include, but are not limited to, changing weather conditions, roadway traffic, dust, dirt, exhaust and noise. Driving is required for this position and staff must have the ability to use a variety of equipment including but not limited to: small hand tools, traffic counter boxes, tubes, iPad, personal computer, printers, telephone, cellular phone, calculator, copy machine, video equipment, and personal safety equipment.
