What You'll Do
The Dakota County Transportation Department is seeking a motivated individual to fill the Senior Engineering Technician position which performs complex and difficult paraprofessional engineering and surveying work duties. Tasks include project management of county road, bridge and trail construction projects and assist Principal Engineering Specialists on large scale projects.

Minimum Qualifications

* Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Land Surveying or closely related field AND 2 years of highway construction, survey or engineering work experience.
OR
* An equivalent combination of education and work experience to total 4 or more years. Education and work experience must be directly related to highway construction, survey or engineering work experience.
AND
* Valid Driver's License

PREFERRED Education and Experience beyond Minimum Qualifications:
* Bituminous Street Inspector
* Concrete Field Inspector Level I & II
* Grading and Base Inspector Level I & II
* Technical experience with pavement management, database management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).
* Completed associate or bachelor's Degree in a closely related field.

DESIRED Education and Experience beyond Preferred Qualifications:
* Bridge Construction Inspector Level I
* Bridge Safety Inspector Level I & II
* Bridge Safety Inspection experience
* Landscape Specialist certification


Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

1. Serve as project manager on county road, bridge and trail projects or assist Principal Engineering Specialists on large scale projects.
2. Manage and oversee the progress and construction methods to ensure projects meet specifications; communicate and resolve construction contract problems.
3. Assist survey crew and coordinates field changes with construction and design staff.
4. Provide material testing for projects, including aggregate gradations, concrete air tests and cylinders, bituminous sampling.
5. Interpret construction plans and calculates necessary field notes. Work with Construction staff to resolve field changes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment

  • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering practices and principles and surveying practices and principles
  • Skill in the use of personal computers, drafting equipment, design software, and state of the art field survey equipment
  • Knowledge of engineering nomenclature, plans, records, and maps, drafting nomenclature and symbols, and contract management methods and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with staff, public, agency staff and other professionals
  • Ability to lead subordinates and coordinates the work activities of a project.
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics and its application to field surveying and engineering computations.
  • Knowledge of project management software and Computer Aided Drafting.
  • MNDOT Technical Certification: Bituminous Street Inspector, Level I & II Concrete Field Inspector, Level I & II Grading and Base Inspector, Level I Bridge Construction Inspector, and Level I Bridge Safety Inspector or the ability to obtain within one year.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 5% inside during the winter months, 95% outside from early spring till early winter. Must be able to perform the following on an occasional to continuous basis; sitting, standing, walking, balancing, bending/stooping, turning/twisting, low-level position, reaching forward/overhead/low levels, firm/simple grasping, and continuous bending/twisting of the arms. Positions requires force/lifting 0 - 24 pounds on a constant basis, 25 - 34 pounds of force occasional, 35 to 50 pounds rare to occasional, anything above 50 pounds is rare and should be done as a team lift. Exposures may include, but are not limited to; changing weather conditions, uneven/rough/sloped walking conditions, roadway traffic and construction equipment on roads or constructions projects, dust, dirt, paint, solvents, cleaners, exhaust and noise. Driving is required for this position and staff must have the ability to use a variety of powered equipment including but not limited to: light and heavy equipment including hammer/maul, machete, hammer drills, chisels, pavement grinder, post-hole digger, survey/GPS equipment, generator, compressor, personal computer, printers, telephone, cellular phone, calculator, copy machine, video equipment, and personal safety equipment.

Location & Schedule
This is an in-person work at our Empire Maintenance Facility in Rosemount, MN. Work is performed Monday through Friday during regular business hours (6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
