Job Summary

The Surgical Training Facility at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute is dedicated to the development and presentation of innovative medical, science and health workshops. Our facility is among a select few academic centers in the U.S. designed exclusively for orthopaedic specialists to practice and perform today's newest and most advanced surgical procedures. Workshops are presented in full or half-day courses to train Orthopaedic Surgeons in skills related to joint arthroscopy, ligament repair, orthopaedic trauma, joint resurfacing and replacement and spine surgery.

Specifically, assigned projects will include lab preparations for surgical training sessions, handling and positioning of cadaveric specimens, surgical draping and instrumentation set-up. During training sessions, the employee will serve as technical support person for the lab, fielding questions regarding specimens, instrumentation and general use of the lab-including the Audio Visual communication system.

The employee will utilize the standard protocols of a gross anatomy lab, operating room, and sterile processing; provide technical assistance and operate the fluoroscopy and arthroscopy machines during surgical training sessions; maintain the cleanliness of the lab, restock laboratory supplies and equipment, and carry out other lab-related duties assigned by the Facility Manager and/or the Facility Coordinator.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $21.47 - $25.29 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF provides expert treatment for all aspects of musculoskeletal injuries including inpatient and outpatient surgical care, rehabilitation, and orthotics and prosthetics. Our physicians have specific training and experience in a broad range of orthopaedic specialties such as sports medicine, trauma, joint replacement, pediatrics, oncology, spine, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, and hand. The Department is internationally recognized for its work in patient care, education, and research. Our basic and translational research programs focus on cartilage and disc regeneration, fracture healing, molecular and stem cell biology, bioengineering, and musculoskeletal development.

Required Qualifications


  • High school graduation and two years of laboratory experience, or two years of college, including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Anatomical knowledge; previous experience working with anatomical tissue
  • Customer Service skills
  • Anatomy Training
  • Knowledge of General and specialty specific surgical instrumentation
  • Knowledge of surgical equipment, setup and breakdown
