Job Summary

The Center for Reproductive Health (CRH) Assistant II is responsible for assisting a variety of tasks within the Embryology and Andrology lab with shipping and receiving of specimens, accessioning, and storing tissue samples, handling administrative cases, and discarding tissue samples. This individual will assist in identifying workflow challenges and processes and proposing new solutions to improve the support systems of the lab. The individual must be flexible and adept at juggling multiple tasks with competing priorities. The individual must be detail oriented, have good people skills and be thorough and able to proactively communicate issues or problems. A high degree of attention to detail and organization are necessary to ensure compliance and safety so the lab can deliver the clinical services in a timely manner. Must be able to work in a team environment and be comfortable with anatomically correct language.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $29.63 - $36.99 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences (Ob/Gyn & RS) is a major academic Department in the School of Medicine (SOM), engaged in clinical, research, and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) campuses, as well as satellite locations throughout the Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of $139 million and the new Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital at Mission Bay. The Department has 102 full-time faculty, 136 other academic appointees, 39 post-doctoral fellows, 20 clinical fellows, 36 residents, 136 voluntary clinical faculty, and 266 staff. The mission of the UCSF Department of OBGYN & Reproductive Sciences is to improve the lives and health of all women through excellence, innovation and leadership in Patient Care, Scientific Discovery, Education, Advocacy. "Leading the way in women's health."

The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Division and the REI Research Group (REIRG), within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, conducts clinical research relating to all aspects of fertility and reproduction, including specific disorders, such as menopause, infertility, endometrial dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school and two years of appropriate experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Ability to understand the complexities within the department.
  • Thorough knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Requires good verbal and written communication skills, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task, and time management skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Requires interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other nonexempt personnel.
  • Computer software skills; competency with MS Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Detail oriented and has an organized approach to their assigned work process. Ability to train and lead CRH Assistant 1 and Student Intern when needed
  • Prior clinical or research lab experience; knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities and perform well under pressure to meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in fertility including medical terminology, general workflow, laboratory concepts and knowledge of specimen handling.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medial records system such as APeX, EPIC, IDEAS or any other related medical database.
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPAA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances, database building/analysis, and data management within some of the following: Access, Stata, SASS/ SPSS, and Teleform programming platforms.
  • Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines:
    • Good Clinical Practice Guidelines
    • Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
    • The Protection of Human Research Subjects
    • Effective Cash Handling Procedures
    • Environmental Health and Safety Training
    • Fire Safety Training
