Overview
Clinical Education Specialist- Clinical Simulations Full-Time Benefit Eligible Functions as a staff development specialist to analyze learning needs and develop appropriate simulation education plans to meet the needs of the service line and organization. Assesses, develops, and implements orientation and education programs for employees to positively impact the quality of patient care. Responsibilities
Educator Role
- Serves as a resource to educators as well as to other health care personnel involved in simulation activities.
- Collaborates with Medical Educators, Nursing Educators and Ancillary Educators to schedule health care professionals in the simulation center.
- Creates, implements, and modifies scenarios to be performed for each group.
- Works collaboratively on the daily tasks and activities with the technicians.
- Maintains equipment in working order and disinfects mannequins.
- Encourages critical thinking and problem solving with simulation participants during the simulation and debriefings.
- Analyzes program evaluations for areas of improvement or opportunities to augment learning.
- Performs needs analysis to determine learning needs from system issues.
- Assists in coordinating and teaching American Heart Association Courses
Coordinator/Facilitator Role
- Assists in coordination of simulation programs taught within the organization.
- Serves on committees that plan, solve problems, or direct service line or organizational initiatives
- Supports an environment of ongoing learning that empowers others, and supports shared decision making.
- Analyzes performance gaps and develops appropriate education plan.
- Balances team and individual responsibilities; be open and objective to other's views; give and welcome feedback; contribute to positive team goals; and put the success of the team above own interests.
- Exhibits knowledge of HIPAA, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
Change Agent Role
- Analyzes the cost effectiveness of practice and education initiatives accounting for risk and improvement of healthcare outcomes.
- Demonstrates leadership skills among interdisciplinary teams to create change in healthcare and organizational culture
- Participates on appropriate committees as requested
Consultant Role
- Assists leadership with integration of new learning into the practice environment
- Assists leadership with identification of available internal and external resources
- Collaborates with leadership, unit based educators, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
Researcher Role
- Collaborates with leadership to support implementation of evidenced based practice into the clinical setting.
- Collects simulation data for annual reports.
- Seeks to understand through inquiry verse making conclusions.
- Evaluates, develops, and implements quality improvement strategies using evidenced based standards of practice and care.
- Evaluates outcomes of practice, utilizing benchmarks, best practice, or research.
Leader Role
- Mentors UBEs in adult learning principles and simulation based education.
- Uses formal and informal mentoring and "just-in-time" teaching methods.
- Accepts responsibility for maintaining and developing personal skill and knowledge in the clinical area.
- Contributes to and supports leadership in the establishment of an environment that promotes individual growth, job satisfaction, and nurtures professional practice.
- Demonstrates knowledge of federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
- Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
- Integrates and demonstrates organizational values and Expectations for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines.
- Operates within the budget for the Simulation Center

Master's Degree in Nursing or commitment to obtain within 5 years |
Master's degree with emphasis in education |
Experience: |
A minimum of 3 years of patient care experience. |
Simulation education experience preferred. |
License(s)/Certification(s): |
Current State RN license Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. Certified BLS Instructor |
Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator is preferred or commitment to obtain within 3 years. ACLS or PALS Instructor is highly recommended or commitment to obtain. |
