Job Summary

Messer owns and operates a large portfolio of industrial gas plants, including ASU, CO2, H2, He, as well as on-site plants, serving customers within a wide range of industries. Instrumentation and automation are key components required for operation of these industrial gas plants. This position will report to the Area Maintenance and Reliability Hub Team, supporting the Area Operations Teams, providing technical engineering support and SME recommendations for all instrumentation, analytical, and controls equipment utilized within the facilities in the area.

Principal Responsibilities:



  • Supports key outcomes in safety, reliability, efficiency, compliance, cost and customer service.
  • Develops skills relating to plant instrumentation and associated low voltage electrical support and assists with execution of small improvement projects under supervision of qualified Instrument Engineers
  • Work with Area controls engineers, mechanical engineers, as well as National Reliability Electrical and Instrumentation Engineers to support any respective initiatives or projects. Develop multi discipline knowledge and understanding as related to instrumentation applications for Industrial gas processes
  • Assist with redlining, maintaining, and developing necessary electrical and instrumentation documentation including wiring schematics, elementary drawings, layout drawings, I/O drawings, cable and conduit schedules, panel schedules, & loop drawings.
  • Provides guidance for field technicians and managers for instrumentation PM's, work instructions, and related procedures. Provide feedback and recommendations for changes as necessary thru the MOC process.
  • Works with Area teams in support of Maintenance and Turnaround planning and execution
  • Develops knowledge with troubleshooting and repair of failed instrumentation, including MOC requirements, and root cause analysis
  • Develops Engineering skills thru projects or instrumentation turnaround maintenance activities including instrument replacement, upgrades, new installations, calibrations, functional checks, and supervision and management of Instrument Technicians and contractors.
  • Develops technical and project management skills and knowledge to ensure accurate scope completion, proper documentation updates, standards compliance, and applicable code compliance (ISA, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, etc.).
  • Complies with Management of Change (MOC) process requirements in regard to submission of technical description, engineering data, drawing and document revision, and follow up thru the approval and execution of changes requiring an MOC
  • Works with the Remote Operations Center (ROC) to execute instrumentation projects and initiatives identified to drive performance and close performance gaps
  • Attends the annual training and certification process in regard to NFPA 70E regulations, ensuring proper knowledge and practical training around utilization of electrical equipment within each Messer plant in the area.
  • Participates in the certification process of all area Instrumentation Technicians in regard to ISA CCST (Certified Control Systems Technician) Level I, Level II & Level III, ensuring proper knowledge in instrumentation theory and practical training around utilization of instrumentation within each Messer plant in the area.
  • Perform instrumentation condition assessments for reliability, efficiency, spares gap, age and obsolescence. Monitors the completion of action plans to reduce and eliminate identified gaps and risks

Education/Experience Requirements:



  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant Engineering Discipline required
  • 0-3 years of experience

  • Good technical and clear communication skills with solid interpersonal skills
  • Develops knowledge, skills and experience with the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of PLC/DCS systems, I/O devices, including transmitters, positioners, control valves, and analytical equipment.
  • Understands and complies with requirement and qualification/certification process for working on live electrical systems
  • Develops knowledge and experience with plant process instrumentation including pressure, temperature, and flow devices, including control valves, actuators, limit switches, measurement devices, analog and digital indicators.
  • Gains experience at troubleshooting control loop issues, identifying problem components and interfaces, and executing effective and efficient solutions to restore critical and needed plant control functions
  • General understanding of regulatory and industry standards and codes
  • Develops knowledge of ASU/CO2/H2/He gas processes
