Position description

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Irvine is hiring a postdoctoral scholar to conduct research on modeling microbial populations, communities, and ecosystems. The appointment is for two years at 100% time, with a comprehensive benefits package. Continuation beyond initial appointment will be based on performance and availability of funding. Salary is based on UCI salary scales and dependent on qualifications and experience.

With funding from federal and private sources, the Allison research team aims to build the next generation of microbial-explicit models to improve understanding of global change impacts on ecosystems and the carbon cycle. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with a diverse team of faculty, academic staff, graduate students, and other postdoctoral scholars to develop models, assimilate data, run simulations, and disseminate research findings.

The responsibilities of this position include:

* Develop, update, and run microbial-explicit models, such as DEMENT, that simulate microbial processes and ecosystem functioning in response to climate, wildfire, and other environmental changes.

* Incorporate microbial models and processes into models running at ecosystem to global scales.

* Collaborate with team members to assemble and refine datasets on microbial traits and ecosystem processes for model parameterization and validation.

* Disseminate models and research outcomes through peer-reviewed articles, code releases, repositories, reports, presentations, workshops, conferences, and other media.

* Mentor graduate and/or undergraduate student researchers.

Interested applicants should submit: (a) a cover letter explaining your relevant background, interest in this research, and your career goals following postdoctoral work; (b) current curriculum vitae; (c) doctoral dissertation abstract; (d) inclusive excellence activities statement; and (e) names and contact information of three references.
