Maryland Oncology Hematology is dedicated to providing the most advanced cancer care available anywhere in an atmosphere of caring compassion. We have over 15 convenient locations throughout Maryland and in DC.

SCOPE: Oversees the Medical Assistant department/staff, treatment rooms, and exam areas while facilitating smooth and efficient patient flow. Directs the coordination of daily room assignments and scheduling of Medical Assistants to assist Physicians. With minimal upline direction, assists with patient care services, i.e. vitals, assessments and procedures. Monitors Physician's schedule to recognize coverage issues and assigns personnel as appropriate. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


Responsibilities

-Onboards and trains new Medical Assistants and completes MA staff performance appraisals.
-Directs daily workflows of MA Lead and MR Sr roles
- Responsible for development of junior level MA staff through instruction and knowledge share. Serves as an escalation point for clarification and/or resolution for staff, patients, and Physicians.
-Assigns Medical Assistants to work with specific physicians according to schedules and patient care needs.
-Creates and maintains the work schedule for medical assistants and provides coverage for TOWP/Sick calls. Also, is responsible for time and labor administration of MA's
-Escorts patients from the lab to the exam room, the physician's office, or the treatment room as appropriate.
-Records patient data prior to each physician visit, including but not limited to: vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes. Obtains all necessary patient records as required by the physician.
-Verifies presence of consent prior to treatment or procedures.
-Collects data and obtains pertinent medical information for referral to the physician. Directs patients from the exam room or physician's office to the next appropriate station, i.e. treatment room or appointment desk.
-Prepares and stocks exam rooms, orders supplies as needed and maintains/controls drug samples. Assists physicians with exams and procedures as requested.
-Delivers patient education including but not limited to distribution of education literature, follow up instructions, etc. Performs lab procedures and processing of lab specimens as needed.
-Files all labs and outside reports accurately and as needed. Obtains blood specimens from peripheral sites as needed and in accordance with OSHA standards and universal precautions.
-Administers subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, including but not limited to, hormones and biological growth factors.
-Maintains all exam room disinfection protocols. Maintains all chemo room and procedure room disinfection protocols.
-Answers incoming patient telephone calls for referral to nurse/pharmacist or physician. Phones in prescriptions and makes other patient calls as directed by physicians or RN.
-Obtains new patient records and previous test results, x-rays, scans, etc.
-Informs physician of patient reschedules and no shows. Maintains physician's scheduling templates and other miscellaneous appointments and meetings. Assists physician with administrative and maintenance of files.
-Maintains patient files and records as appropriate. Assists in the supervision of Medical Assistants and other non-licensed patient care providers as needed.


Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent. Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants required. Minimum of seven years experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant in a hospital or clinic setting. Two (2) years previous Lead or Supervisory experience required. Phlebotomy experience required. Current CPR certification required. Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
