The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine seeks a Technical Research Assistant to join their interdisciplinary team and contribute to projects focused on cardiovascular disease. The individual will provide assistance and support to other researchers in the laboratory with ongoing experiments. These include histology, time-sensitive processing of human specimens, and mouse colony management.
The successful candidate is expected to work under the general supervision of several Principal Investigators and postdoctoral fellows and will be trained for specific protocols. Supervision will be available to handle unusual situations and regularly review work.

Will perform a variety of techniques following established protocols and methodologies including cryosectioning, histological and immuno-staining. Will use microscopes to capture pictures of tissue staining and perform staining quantification with computer software.

Will obtain human tissue samples from the surgical suites and process the samples for future histological experiments and the culture of primary vascular cells.

Will maintain mouse colonies breeding and genotyping. Will assist in mouse experiments, in tissue dissection, harvesting and embedding. Will prepare arterial specimens for en-face analysis.

Will maintain basic records of methodologies and findings in an electronic lab notebook.

Will orient and train staff and collaborators in all histochemical procedures and techniques.

Will maintain morphology lab, including equipment and supplies in neat and orderly manner.

Will identify unusual findings and report them to the supervisor.

Will participate in compliance with regulatory agencies and local hospital safety surveys and procedures including hazardous material surveys and chemical inventories.

Will aid the daily operation of researchers, and trainees in morphology lab. Will engage in other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Computer literacy.
  • Laboratory research experience; basic knowledge of good laboratory practice.
  • Ability to record data methodically and to analyze data using statistics.
  • Good organizational skill; detail oriented.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism.
  • Ability to perform routine tests and to prioritize work.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work with other lab members and collaborators.

EDUCATION:

  • BA or BS (required)

EXPERIENCE:

  • Laboratory experience desirable
  • Undergraduate coursework or projects may be considered as appropriate experience and may be credited upon hire
