Flexible & Rigid Foam Materials Tester

Duration: 7-8 months (up to 12)
Pay range: 20hr-25hr.

As a member of the Materials Testing team, this position requires a working knowledge of the standardized test methods primarily for testing flexible foam and secondarily for testing rigid foam materials. Duties include performing the testing as well as sample preparation under minimal direction of more senior testing personnel. This position will support the R&D and AD efforts for Molded (primarily automotive applications) and Slab (primarily furniture and bedding) flexible foam and rigid foam materials used primarily for insulation of buildings and appliances. The high volumes of testing for flexible and rigid foam requires consistent high productivity performance, and a high degree of planning, attention to detail, teamwork, communication and organizational skills.

Major Tasks:
* Performs required testing of flexible and rigid foam materials, verification of results, and electronic reporting and archiving of data under minimal supervision for a limited scope of test procedures:
o Receipt and verification of sample materials and project requests
o Prepares specimens, sets up test equipment for appropriate test methods
o Completes testing and ensures data is transferred from local testing equipment to the Sample Manager LIMS
o Schedules aging and other time-related sample preparation activities to ensure optimum testing efficiency
o Identifies areas for improvement based on the official KPI's for flex and rigid of the MT Group.
* Performs routine maintenance and verification on equipment and/or instruments covered by standard procedures with minimal supervision; assists in troubleshooting problems and suggests causes or improvements utilizing established procedures.
* Follows operational and safety procedures (e.g. SOP, JSA, PHA, Management of Change Procedure / eMOC system) and provides feedback.
* Supports other members of the (multi-disciplinary) Materials Testing group where necessary and based on the backup/3rd viable option matrix and the incumbent's training (when opportunity arises may be trained on additional materials testing methods as a way to grow within the position) including providing test specimens or test results for specific requests at the direction of experienced testing personnel.
* Aware of practices to obtain consistency of results; ability to follow standard procedures to comply with the A2LA Accreditation requirements; run standards or machine checks/verifications and maintain control charts (SQC).
* Communicates with internal stakeholders to obtain information necessary to perform tasks/job, exchange information or observations, and to make suggestions.
After training the contractor is expected, with minimal supervision, to organize and carry out testing activities safely, efficiently, and with proper attention to detail to ensure high quality test results are provided to our customers. Incumbent must be able to competently and independently operate testing equipment, both computer controlled (software driven) or stand alone, on which the incumbent has been trained.
Contribution context: Individual contributor, but requires teamwork with other staff and flexibility in day to day activities which will vary depending on demand.

Work Relations: Reports to the Group Head Materials Testing of TAP NA.
* Teamwork within the Materials Testing group is necessary to ensure smooth operations on a daily basis as customer needs and priorities change constantly.
* Good communication and good relationships with internal business entity customers are important in understanding and meeting their needs.
* Effective communication with co-workers and management / supervision is always important for providing quality results in a timely manner to our customers. Also, working toward forming solid relationships with co-workers, external calibration vendors and internal service and maintenance organizations is important to facilitate high-quality, uninterrupted operations.

Qualifications:
* High School diploma plus 2-5 years of technical/mechanical/operations experience or an Associate Degree in a technical discipline with some work experience.
* Knowledge of basic algebra and statistics for performing calculations necessary to analyze test data, e.g. significant figures, standard deviation, mean, etc., and the ability to maintain control charts.
* Computer literacy to work with basic office software; also, independently work with the Sample Manager LIMS and with software operating test equipment.
* Ability to read and understand test methods such as ASTM, ISO or other industry specific test specifications, e.g. automotive, electronic, or other.
* Strong mechanical aptitude to understand operations of respective test equipment and sample preparation using the flexible saw to create proper dimensioned test specimens.
* Interpersonal skill level to interact with diverse individuals is critical. Experience in a service provider capacity preferred.
* Prior experience in testing Lab, e.g. testing Flex foams, is preferred.
* High standards for safety and safety systems will be essential requirements for this position.
