Purpose of Job

A trauma registrar collects, analyzes, and reports on data related to patients who have suffered a traumatic injury. They are responsible for maintaining a trauma registry database that tracks the care and outcomes of trauma patients. Trauma registrars collaborate with trauma teams, hospital staff, and external agencies to ensure the quality and accuracy if trauma data and to improve trauma care and prevention.

Job Functions


  1. Works with electronic medical records and trauma data collection systems and is required to adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy and security regulations and policies.
  2. Collects trauma registry data from the medical record according to the requirements of the hospital and state trauma registry data definitions including demographic characteristics, prehospital information, initial hospital treatment, operating room usage, outcome and final deposition.
  3. Identifies patients appropriate for trauma registry.
  4. Participates in periodic quality reviews.
  5. Provides professional and courteous customer service to internal and external customers.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Work Experience


  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Successful completion of the American Trauma Registry Course within 6 months of hire

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions.
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above.
  • Must be able to analyze and process detail-oriented information.
  • Must be able to read and understand data definitions using a standard data dictionary.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Must be very comfortable working with technology and personal computer.
  • Requires the ability to work independently but function well within a team.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Associate degree or certification in health care related field
  • 2 years of experience in an EMS or healthcare setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience with electronic medical records
