Logistics Manager

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
United States, California, Berkeley
1 Cyclotron Road (Show on map)
Jan 22, 2025

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) has an opening for a Logistics Manager to join the team and support the ALS-U (Advanced Light Source Upgrade) project. As a cornerstone of scientific innovation, the ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades. This upgrade will equip the facility with cutting-edge x-ray capabilities, ensuring its leadership for years to come.

In this pivotal role, you will oversee and optimize the ALS-U project's supply chain, navigating a complex network of domestic and international vendors, while managing hardware and materials delivery for a large-scale, multidisciplinary initiative. Success in this role will require a strategic mindset, technical acumen, and exceptional leadership skills to support the timely execution of project milestones. Additionally, you will spearhead efficient operations within the project's storage and warehouse facilities, contributing to the seamless progression of this high-impact initiative.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard X-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,500 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities - including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others - offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft X-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art X-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the ALS-U supply chain operations to ensure timely and accurate receipt, storage, kitting, and staging of equipment to meet production schedules.
  • Manage logistics across multiple storage facilities and buildings, ensuring all materials are accounted for in the inventory database and tracked accurately by location and timeline.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure equipment is ready and available when needed and notify appropriate stakeholders of changes or updates.
  • Work closely with the lab's transportation team to coordinate deliveries, relying on third-party services for transportation and logistics.
  • Establish and implement processes to optimize the use of space and resources across storage locations.
  • Develop strategies to mitigate risks and resolve logistical challenges proactively.
  • Maintain accurate records and data in an inventory management tool, ensuring full traceability and accountability for materials.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a small team, fostering collaboration and operational excellence.
  • Communicate effectively with technical staff, project managers, and other stakeholders to align logistics with project goals.
  • Establish and lead implementation of processes and practices for the management of data related to physical material items.
  • Utilize analytical and empirical tools and methodologies to explore, simulate, develop, and validate cost-effective and timely solutions for complex supply chain and logistics problems; provide cost-benefit analysis as needed
  • Coordinate with ALS-U QA Manager and subsystem QA engineers to ensure quality assurance and quality control are integrated into the supply chain
