THE ROLE:

As Assistant General Counsel, Benefits, you will play an integral role in helping a highly complex, fast paced organization in a rapidly changing environment by providing advice on a broad range of compensation and benefits matters in support AMD's global total rewards strategies. You will provide counseling on a wide range of matters related to employee benefit plans and arrangements, collaborating closely with individuals in multiple departments, including human resources, finance, and Law Department colleagues. You will have the opportunity to provide practical and business-oriented legal advice and counselling on a range of benefits issues.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate will have broad and deep benefits law experience, both in private practice and as in-house counsel for multinational companies, possess good judgment, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work with and oversee outside counsel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing comprehensive advice and support with respect to a variety of health and welfare and compensation plans and processes.
  • Advising plan fiduciaries on plan governance matters, including advice and training on ERISA and fiduciary responsibilities related to ERISA qualified plans.
  • Establish effective working relationships with internal partners and clients.
  • Will function as part of a global team of employment attorneys to meet the overall objectives for health and welfare compliance.
  • Assists organization in the formulation of strategy as to matters involving ERISA, Affordable Care Act, the Internal Revenue Code, HIPAA and regulations affecting health and welfare plans.
  • Develop and maintain education for health and welfare compliance
  • Create and deliver presentations to internal staff and to external clients and prospects.
  • Monitor and identify legal developments such as relevant statutes, regulations, case law and legal articles affecting employee benefit plans.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Legal experience as an employee benefits and compensation attorney.
  • Strong expertise and experience with retirement, health and welfare, and executive compensation plans, governance, and related laws and regulations, as well as experience drafting benefit plan documents and advising plan fiduciaries.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of both federal and state benefits and executive compensation laws.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful relationships with legal teams, Benefits and Compensation Department, fiduciary committees, and outside counsel.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other stakeholders, steer complex conversations, and effectively influence senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize, focus, and execute on critical priority projects.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication; ability to build trust and effectively communicate legal concepts to business partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace, and demonstrated self-initiative, integrity, and resilience.
  • A combination of law firm and in-house experience.
  • Benefits law litigation experience a plus.
  • Experience and expertise regarding benefits issues across a multinational company and/or multiple related companies.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, and admission and member in good standing to applicable State Bar.

At AMD, your base pay is one part of your total rewards package. Your base pay will depend on where your skills, qualifications, experience, and location fit into the hiring range for the position. You may be eligible for incentives based upon your role such as either an annual bonus or sales incentive.
