About the opportunity

Embark on an exciting journey with SWCA as a Water Resources Technician (as needed) in our Salt Lake City, Utah office. As a Water Resources Technician, you will work primarily in a field-based environment with some in-office and lab time. This position offers a unique opportunity to launch your career in environmental sciences with hands-on experience, supported by leadership dedicated to your professional growth.

The applicant should be able to work independently at most 15 hours per week, on an unpredictable and fluid schedule. Candidates should be available on an "as-needed" basis to meet project requirements, including nights and weekends. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing sites for stormwater sampling, collecting stormwater samples (as weather permits), troubleshooting and maintaining sampling equipment, and accurately collecting and recording field data. All sampling sites are within a one-hour drive of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan area, candidates will be provided with a company vehicle as needed for field deployments.

This position will span from the end of February 2025 to the end of June 2025 (or until all site have been successfully sampled). Start date is flexible, if the position is still open and we are still hiring.

What you will accomplish

  • Support the water resources team in stormwater data collection for ongoing water quality reporting.
  • Support troubleshooting and maintenance of field equipment on a periodic basis.
  • Engage in office tasks such as data management, reporting, and other activities to support the Water Resources team.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required:

  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must have a flexible attitude towards scheduling and planning based on ever-changing project needs.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new survey and monitoring techniques and protocols.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed based on project requirements.
  • Ability to travel, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather and rugged terrain, with the capacity to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, execute tasks effectively, and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Adheres to the safety program and looks out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Experience with natural or water resources fieldwork through coursework, projects, professional/intern experience, or volunteer work.
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, pursuing a degree in an environmental-related field, or a recent graduate. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Basic knowledge of water quality principles or hydrology.

A Water Resources Technician in this Salt Lake City, UT- based position can expect an hourly rate of $20.71/hour - $26.71hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
