About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Natural Resources Technician to support our Jacksonville, FL office. In this role, you will conduct biological field surveys, assist with data collection, data entry, and contribute to report writing for various natural resources projects. The office supports projects primarily in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, as well as across the South Region, including Texas. Our work spans multiple service areas, including renewable energy, oil & gas, transmission, site development, and ecological restoration.

This position requires flexibility, as you may work long hours in challenging conditions and travel for extended periods.

It is a temporary, hourly position with a mix of office and field assignments.


What you will accomplish

  • Assist crew leaders with a variety of natural resources field studies including wetland delineations, stream assessments, vegetation and rare plant surveys, avian and wildlife surveys, aquatics surveys, and wildlife habitat assessments
  • Record data on GPS units and field site forms or other forms
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms
  • Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms
  • Operate SWCA vehicles. Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads
  • Assist project managers in data organization and interpretation, project organization and management, permit writing, and report preparation as needed
  • Adhere to SWCA's safety procedures and standards of scientific and professional ethics

Experience and qualifications for success

Required qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related life sciences field
  • Knowledge of Florida and southeastern flora and fauna
  • Working knowledge of wetland and riparian plant species, wetland soils, and hydrology indicators
  • Experience in avian or wildlife surveys in Florida
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures
  • Ability to apply innovative techniques and make independent decisions or collaborate effectively as part of a team
  • Strong multitasking skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and readiness to take on increasing responsibilities
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time
  • Ability to work in challenging outdoor environments and carry up to 40 lbs.

An employee in this Jacksonville, FL based position can expect an hourly pay rate of $18.50 to $21.32/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
