Job Summary: Cost Accountant

The Cost Accountant will be responsible for the development and analysis of raw material and ingredient product costs and standards and provide insight to various departments. The Cost Accountant will be expected to acquire detailed knowledge of SunOpta's operations, products, and costs. This position will also provide analysis and insight into various accounts and inventory costs. This individual will also be expected to become a proficient user of Oracle.

Essential Functions of the Job:



  • Routine standard costing and reporting of raw materials and ingredients inventory.
  • Work with the Procurement team to set annual material costs, upload them to Oracle, and publish review of cost change impact.
  • Supplier rebates tracking, reporting and analysis.
  • Purchase Price Variance analysis and reporting.
  • Month-end responsibilities include statistical data gathering, journal entry preparation, control performance and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Support to internal and external audit on SOX controls and substantive testing of costs.
  • Quarterly inventory reserve analysis and reporting.
  • Support the annual / quarterly budget process as requested. Work with the IT department to set up Oracle and Hyperion for the next fiscal year and update planning templates.
  • Annual support for Tax return related to inventory requests.
  • Perform monthly Oracle close procedures.
  • Recommend IT System functionality and enhancement recommendations as needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.



Supervisory Responsibilities:



  • None.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or similar.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • 3+ years at a manufacturing company which uses standard costing and captures production in work orders or batches.
  • Professional Designation a plus.



Knowledge and Skills:



  • Proficiency in Oracle preferred, or similar ERP.
  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills, expertise with pivot tables, lookup formulas etc.
  • Ability to present data-based analysis to non-finance colleagues.
  • Understanding of variance reporting and analysis (manufacturing and purchase price variances).
  • Prior experience working with external auditors.
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Audit Principles and Sarbanes Oxley.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated multi-function team player.
  • Self-starter with a passion for continuous improvement & strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, problem solve and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to ask probing questions regarding changes impacting the business.



Additional Considerations:



  • Travel Expectation: up to 5%.
  • The position is based at our HQ in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
  • Relocation or international remote working arrangements (outside of the US) will not be considered.
