We are currently searching for an experienced Forest Regeneration Technician at our Forest Resources Nursery/Seed Orchard facility in Eutaw, AL. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for assisting with operations at The Westervelt Nursery and Orchard Facility to ensure products and services provided are of the highest quality and facilities and equipment are maintained at the highest level of operational readiness. Also, serves to ensure successful reforestation of Westervelt Woodlands during regeneration activities. Over time, as their experience level grows, the Nursery-Orchard Technician will be filling in for the Nursery/Orchard Coordinators as needed.
- Assists Nursery Manager during major operations to include seed stratification and treatment, crop sowing, crop inventory, and seedling lifting and shipping.
- Monitors seedling crops during growing season, performing daily crop maintenance as needed.
- Directly involved in regeneration process as liaison for nursery during planting operations by ensuring readiness and delivery of seedlings, assisting planting contractors and foresters, and auditing planting and seedling quality.
- Performs grounds maintenance of Nursery and Orchard sites to include mowing, spraying, fertilization, pest control, and general upkeep of orchards, test sites, nursery and growing tables.
- Performs maintenance, repair, and building of facilities and equipment to include sowing system, fertigation/irrigation system, green house, shop facilities, tractors, forklifts, and other equipment.
- Oversee work of contract labor crews and audits work quality as needed.
- Diagnose equipment problems, replace, or repair parts, test and make adjustments.
- Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
- Provide emergency call-out services as required.
- Support Orchard personnel as needed during Orchard and Tree Improvement Activities.
Required Qualifications: Minimum:
- Associate's degree in forestry, Agriculture, Horticulture or related field.
- 1-2 years' experience in Forestry and Silviculture operations.
- Experience with reforestation.
- Ability to obtain Chemical applicators license.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Self-motivated and detail oriented.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in equipment operation and repair of tractor, bush hog, manlift, well, pump, and irrigation systems.
Preferred:
- Welding/repair work
- Forklift operation
- Tractor operation
- Background in forestry, agriculture, or farming
- Able to speak Spanish
