Laboratory Scientist/MLS/CLS/MT Safety Education Coordinator - Point of Care Testing - Days

This position is responsible for the safety, regulatory adherence, and coordination of a Continued Education program for all areas of the Department. This position also coordinates the laboratory's compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies (AABB, JCAHO, CLIA, CDC, CAP, FDA, etc.) and with state, local and VCUHS policies; to include maintenance of Pathology policies. Provides oversight of the Pathology Safety program and coordinates and conducts safety training for the Department. Prepares management reports, as required. Provides oversight of the Pathology Occurrence Management process and works with the Quality Management (QM) committee in the development, monitoring and reporting of QM monitors for the Pathology laboratories.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Certified as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or CLS by the National Credentialing Agency* *Unless grandfathered under previous requirements or Ph.D. or foreign trained MD Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or CLS (NCA)* *Unless grandfathered under previous requirements or Ph.D. or foreign trained MD Experience REQUIRED: Minimum of 4 years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Scientist with at least 3 years in a leadership role. Experience PREFERRED: At least one (1) year of experience in a supervisory role. Education/training REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree in clinical Lab Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program* *Unless grandfathered under previous requirements or Ph.D. or foreign trained MD Education/training PREFERRED: Master's Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program Independent action(s) required: Establish and implement laboratory safety programs. Interpret and explain laboratory safety policies and procedures. Ensure availability of in-service education for safety and continuing education. Monitor and maintain records of safety and education programs for pathology employees. Exercise independent analytical skills with appropriate judgment regarding problem resolution and communication. When needed, seek advice and guidance from the Department Chair, Divisional Chairs, Director of Laboratory Operations, Medical Directors, Faculty or other appropriate staff. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): Supervision of lab staff to accomplish the functions required for the Pathology Department. Assumes the responsibilities of shift supervisor and/or manager in their absence, as required Conducts staff performance evaluations Counsels staff to enhance job performance and career advancement Performs the duties of a technical specialist in the laboratory Supervises and directs staff to ensure accurate and timely reporting of laboratory safety events and regulatory compliance Additional position requirements: N/A Age Specific groups served: N/A Physical Requirements (includes use of assistance devices as appropriate): Physical: Lifting less than 20 lbs.
