Position is responsible for preparing, operating and maintaining a multi-color offset lithograph printing press or single color screen press to produce high-quality secured printing and prepare product for final processing in the Finishing Department to ensure the production and timely delivery of high-quality plastic secured cards according to customer specifications and Company quality objectives.

Schedule: Monday-Thursday 3:00pm-1:30am

Hourly rate - $27.00

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Press Operator Level I

    Understands the location and function of all emergency stops on the machine.
  • Comprehends and follows instructions and specifications found on the Proof, Print Ticket, Archive, and associated paperwork.
  • Interprets and follows the schedule generated by Printing Manager and/or PrintFlow.
  • Prepares the press (in the case of offset) by mixing and filling fountain solutions, loading and setting the feeder, hanging plates and setting sheet detection and make ready for next job. Prepares the press (in the case of screen) by blocking out screen, inspecting screen for defects, setting up the feed and carriage system and registering the job.
  • Ensures quality and color of printed sheets meet customer job specifications including responsibility for final press sheet color okay prior to final production run.
  • Continually monitors and corrects any quality problems that may occur during the press run to minimize downtime and waste.
  • Conducts routine quality checks for any printing imperfections during each run.
  • Maintains an accurate record of all completed work in shop floor data system and/or manual forms as required.
  • Ensures completed product is staged in next work area with appropriate job ticket information attached.
  • Is capable of running up to 3 spot colors simultaneously (in the case of offset) and maintaining correct densities.
  • Is capable of correctly using a handheld densitometer (in the case of offset).
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Keeps materials, supplies, product carts and any other supplies needed stocked in department and notifies Press Manager (or designated personnel) of any inventory order needs.
  • Maintains acceptable productivity, quality, service, spoilage, security and safety goals.
  • Conducts self in a respectful and professional manner with a focus on teamwork, quality and timeliness at all times.
  • Logs time, production transactions, Quality Self Inspection entries, and audit transactions properly in Monarch shop floor system.

Press Operator Level II (Completes all Press Operator Level I responsibilities plus):

  • Performs minor preventative maintenance, conducts minor repairs and reports any mechanical defects to Printing Manager on equipment.
  • Is capable of running more than 3 spot colors and/or 6 color process simultaneously while maintaining correct densities (in the case of offset).
  • Is capable of correctly using a scanning densitometer (in the case of offset).
  • Is capable of troubleshooting minor mechanical and process related issues.
  • Is capable of training a Level 1-2 Press Helper
  • Is trusted with verbal approvals of Level 1 Press Operator quality issues.

Press Operator Level III (Completes all Press Operator Level II responsibilities plus):

  • Performs all levels of preventative maintenance (including roller changes in the case of offset), conducts minor repairs and reports any mechanical defects to Printing Manager on equipment.
  • Is capable of troubleshooting all levels of mechanical and process related issues.
  • Is capable of training a Level 1-3 Press Helper
  • Is trusted with verbal approvals of Level 1 & 2 Press Operator quality issues.


Qualifications

Requirements:

  • High school education or equivalent with minimum 5 years of experience using multi-color offset lithograph printing press with an automated console including ability to lay down uniform solids, screen tints, halftones and familiarity with printing ink and fountain solutions.
  • Solid detail and decision making skills in order to setup equipment, check product quality and make adjustments to meet customer deadlines and requirements.
  • Solid mechanical aptitude with ability to select and use appropriate equipment, supplies and tools and be able to set pressures on new rollers .
  • Solid math skills to be able to compute percentages, weights and measures.
  • Ability to follow/interpret complex written and oral instructions and specifications in English
  • Proficient communication skills including reading, writing and speaking in English
  • Must be security and safety oriented.
  • Must be reliable through good attendance, punctuality and cooperation.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is conducted in a standing position and requires walking, bending, stooping, pulling, climbing and lifting of materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Environment is noisy and may require ear protection
  • Work involves good eyesight, hand/eye coordination and excellent color vision to be able to ensure quality product and maintain safety
  • Work involves full use of hands/fingers in order to use precision or semi-precision equipment, tools or instruments requiring deft hand movements
  • Work involves dealing with fine detail, which can be tiring both mentally and physically
  • Works with rapidly moving machinery that may require quick adjustments to minimize waste
  • Work is conducted in shifts and may require overtime on other shifts to meet deadlines
