Overview
This is a remote role that may be hired in several markets across the United States. This position is a first line of defense professional responsible for the support and execution of various risk programs and activities in support of multiple Business Units (BU). Manages associates and/or teams that manage or support internal and external assessments/examinations. Facilitates and/or monitors execution of risk policies, standards, procedures and/or program requirements. Oversees the communication of risk-related information and serves as an effective communication channel between the Risk Management Department, regulators, and First Citizens Bank business units. Leads strategy discussions and provides input to manage exam logistics, including scheduling, document requests, and regulator interactions. Maintains collaborative partnerships with senior management across lines of business, internal departments, Risk Management program leaders, peer managers within first line of defense risk, and other stakeholders to enhance BU regulatory coordination. Manages the recruitment, training, and development process for staff.
Responsibilities
- Regulatory Coordination - Works with Business Risk & Controls leader and senior management to create risk management strategies ensuring key priorities are appropriately managed and are aligned. Effectively challenges evidentiary materials and/or strategy to ensure bank and regulatory alignment. Manages and recommends enhancements, ensures timely resolution of identified issues and proper documentation for future exams, and provides leadership with regular updates on exam progress and potential concerns. Interprets business trends and drivers to identify and communicate underlying patterns, interdependencies and emerging opportunities and risks. Partners with cross-functional teams to assess the impact of external factors including regulatory changes, market disruptions or business operations and strategy.
- Risk Program Execution - Serves as the primary liaison in partnership with regulatory relations between the BUs and examiners. Establishes clear processes, timelines, and responsibilities for managing regulatory exams. Ensures proper escalation of issues to senior leadership and risk committees. Ensures all regulatory requests and submissions are accurate, complete, and timely. Identifies and mitigates potential compliance gaps or weaknesses before exams. Partners with other functions (i.e. Compliance, 2LOD) to ensure alignment with broader risk management and governance objectives. Participates in regulatory inquires, examinations, and audits in collaboration with internal stakeholders. Oversees regulatory submissions, response, and report requirements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission. Monitors regulatory developments and findings and assesses their potential impact on the organization's risk profile and regulatory compliance.
- Risk Governance & Reporting - Designs and oversees the implementation of risk reporting frameworks, dashboards and metrics to provide senior management with timely and actionable insights into risk profile and risk management activities. Directs the production of regular risk reports and presentations that summarizes key risk indicators, risk trends, emerging risks, and risk mitigation efforts for financial and non-financial risk stripes. Oversees the effectiveness of risk reporting processes and tools, identifying areas of optimization. Leads governance (i.e. Forums) and communication routines with the BU team to ensure appropriate distribution of risk program related information.
- Managerial Functions - Makes appropriate changes to team processes, procedures and efficiencies to meet objectives. Manages the performance training and evaluation of staff. Maximizes department achievements by providing professional development. Participates in mandatory risk training and educates BU personnel on key risk programs and topics. Develops and manages short- and long-term staffing needs.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of experience in Financial Services, First Line Risk Management, Enterprise Risk or Operational Risk OR High School Diploma or GED and 14 years of experience in Financial Services, First Line Risk Management, Enterprise Risk or Operational Risk Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in the management of exam logistics
- Experience in regulator interactions and development of responses and evidentiary packages
- Knowledge of risk techniques, practices, and control frameworks,
- Knowledge of various banking and government regulatory requirements and processes,
- Knowledge of regulatory guidance pertaining to enterprise risk and operational risk,
- Ability to work effectively with associates, senior management, and various committees
- Previous experience managing or leading and coaching both people and processes
- Large Financial Institution experience

Job postings may come down early due to business need or a high volume of applicants. If hired in North Carolina, the base pay for this position is generally between $156,480 and $220,000. Actual starting base pay will be determined based on skills, experience, location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law.
