Berkeley Lab's (LBNL) Engineering Division is hiring an Electrical Engineer for the ALS-U upgrade project. This role involves managing the ALS cable plant, coordinating with subsystem leads to address cabling needs, creating routing plans and cable tray designs, ensuring National Electrical Code (NEC) compliance, and collaborating with stakeholders to meet project objectives and installation requirements.

What You Will Do:



  • Support AC and cabling distribution design, installation planning, and routing for various systems, directing other personnel as needed.
  • Provide documentation, including drawings, schematics, parts lists, specifications, and revision control per LBNL, ALS-U, and ALS requirements.
  • Work on a variety of Lab projects independently developing solutions.
  • Contribute to cabling design and implementation for programmatic and experimental systems, ensuring NEC compliance.
  • Interact with internal and external stakeholders with a customer-focused approach.
  • Analyze equipment, conduct testing, and update software/documentation.
  • Manage project cost, schedule, estimates, procurements, and lead installation, integration, and testing efforts.
  • Select components based on specifications and reliability.
  • Adhere to Berkeley Lab's Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies and maintain up-to-date training.
  • Coordinate electronic and mechanical resources for tasks/projects.
  • Improve documentation and procedures.
  • Guide technical staff.



What is Required:



  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Electrical Engineering or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant electrical engineering experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with design/implementation of experimental electronics systems, including NEC compliance, rack layouts, and cabling plans.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) and 3D CAD software (e.g., Creo Parametric).
  • Knowledge of NEC code for AC distribution and programmatic equipment in industrial settings.
  • Ability to manage projects and contractor electrical design/installation.
  • Strong engineering judgment in selecting work methods and techniques.
  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to work effectively with a team of scientists, engineers, technicians, and students.



Desired Qualifications:



  • A Master's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with procurement processes, including bid documentation for high-value purchases.



Notes:



  • Appointment Type: This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Salary Information: This position is expected to pay $111,000 - $136,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $98,904 - $166,932 annually for job code E20.2. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • Background Check: This position may be subject to a background check.   • Work Modality: This position will be performed onsite at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, located at 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
