The Automotive Finishes Division Chemist I position is responsible for completing activities related to new product development within the Automotive OEM Interior segment of the Performance Coatings Group. The incumbent will have opportunities to demonstrate leadership while providing support to internal customers such as marketing, sales, manufacturing, field technical service and quality as well as external customers (Automotive OEMs and Tiers). Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships. * Accountable for providing timely and accurate solutions to multiple product-development challenges of moderate complexity. * Performs material evaluations, problem-solving exercises, and formulation work in support of new-product development. * Has a basic understanding of structure-property relationships and can communicate this to peers and customers. * Designs and executes experiments, provides clear and accurate analysis of results, draw conclusions based on observations and data, and makes recommendations. * Provides effective verbal and written feedback to communicate results and project status. * Writes technical reports of moderate complexity. * Effectively communicates with project leaders, managers, customers, and suppliers, as well as utilizes an internal network of resources. * Demonstrates good laboratory practices, including notebook documentation. * Performs laboratory work while maintaining safety as a top priority. * Ability to work independently or in a team-oriented environment. * Strong time management skills with demonstrated ability to plan and complete work assignments. * Functions under low-level supervision * Participates in external customer interaction with field / sales personnel. * Travels for manufacturing support, line trials and customer visits. * Trains or mentors new or lower-level chemists, technologists/technicians. * Additional duties as assigned. BASIC REQUIREMENTS * Must have the legal right to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status) * Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field. * 1 year of coatings-specific industry lab experience * Critical thinking skills * Computer knowledge and data analysis * Excellent math knowledge PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS * Bachelor's degree in chemistry/polymer-related field * 3+ years of paint and coatings experience * Experience working with products and technologies including, but not limited to, solvent-based and waterborne technologies, monocoat and basecoat/clear coat products, solid shades and metallics over plastic substrates. * Knowledge of and experience with DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) methodology and tool usage. Travel Requirement: Up to 10% Domestic Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in 2025. Until then, the role will be based at Warrensville Technology Center, located at 4440 Warrensville Center Road, Warrensville Hts, OH 44128.
