The School of Art and Design provides a multidisciplinary approach to art and design that offers opportunities for students to develop their creative and critical thinking abilities by thinking through making. The school currently enrolls more than 500 students in twelve areas across three degrees. The School of Art and Design is the largest BFA art program in the University of North Carolina system and has been continuously accredited by NASAD since 1962. The school has 35 full-time faculty and is located in the Jenkins Fine Arts Center, a 142,000 square-foot facility with specialized equipment, tools, and technology for the School of Art and Design's 14 disciplines-animation/ interactive design, art education, art history, ceramics, film and video production, glass, graphic design, illustration, metal design, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textile design. From computer labs, digital looms, CNC router, and laser cutters to a woodshop, foundry, letterpress shop, black and white darkroom, and beyond, the school's facilities are comprehensive and available to faculty and students who think, make, and work across the school's disciplines.
Job Duties
ECU's School of Art and Design seeks an Assistant Director for Graduate Programs. This position will play a pivotal role in advancing the School's business, instructional, and student success objectives by overseeing and supporting all aspects of graduate education. This nine-month position, supplemented by a stipend to accommodate year-round responsibilities, ensures consistent leadership in graduate student recruitment, retention, curriculum development, and program administration. Serving as the School's Graduate Programs Director, the Assistant Director provides essential guidance to MFA candidates as they navigate the complexities of their thesis exhibitions and academic documentation.
Key functions of this role are the following:

  • Lead graduate student recruitment efforts by organizing and conducting tours, collaborating with faculty to engage prospective students, and maintaining an accurate and informative online presence for the program.
  • Work closely with the Director of the School of Art and Design and the Graduate Committee to oversee graduate-level assessments and reviews.
  • Ensure that academic standards are met and that students receive the necessary support for their success.
  • Manage graduate faculty status applications and establishing standards.
  • Overseeing the solicitation and allocation of graduate assistantships and financial awards.
  • Maintain the budget for graduate assistantships in consultation with the College, ensuring appropriate use of funds and equitable distribution of resources.
  • Act as the School's Graduate Curriculum Committee (GCC) Liaison by collaborating with faculty to develop and refine graduate curriculum proposals.
  • Advocate for the School's graduate programs at the university level, fostering strong connections with the East Carolina University Graduate School.
  • Aim to achieve that the School's offerings the remain rigorous, relevant, and aligned with institutional and industry standards to attract and retain talented graduate students, and provide a well-supported and enriching environment for advanced study in the arts.


Beyond these academic and administrative responsibilities, the role supports the daily operations by officing in the main office for a minimum of 15 hours per week during regular business hours during the academic year; summer office hours are required and negotiable.

Minimum Education/Experience


  • MFA or equivalent terminal degree in art and/or design field, art education, or art history
  • Faculty experience in the School of Art and Design
  • Leadership potential in the School of Art and Design

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • PhD in art and/or design field, art education, or art history
  • Demonstrated leadership with administrative tasks in the School of Art and Design
  • Demonstrated knowledge of graduate admissions and registration policies, regulations, and procedures
