Employees in this position are part of a teaching team responsible to plan and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum for preschool aged children.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Development and implementation of programs and operational procedures for preschool children which focus on the promotion of a developmentally appropriate curriculum that meets Illinois licensing requirements and the standards set forth by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. This includes:
  • Supervise children to safeguard their health and safety.
  • Participate in planning and carrying out appropriate activities promoting the intellectual, social, and emotional, and physical development of the children in accordance with licensing requirements and NAEYC standards.
  • Provide for the physical needs of the children (such as supervising feeding, dressing, naps, and other activities).
  • Maintain daily communication and cooperation with parents of children (such as child's mental and physical condition, changes in daily schedule, or child's participation in activities).
  • Under the supervision and with the support of the Child Development Supervisor prepare reports on the growth and development of assigned children as part of the ongoing assessment process and in preparation for parent-teacher conferences.
  • Care for classroom equipment and materials and performs necessary housekeeping tasks.
  • Substitute for higher level personnel, if needed and qualified.
  • Participate in activities leading to professional growth including goal setting, weekly reflective practices, & in-service and pre-service professional development activities held in the community and conducted by the UIC Children's Center in order to meet Illinois licensing guidelines (20 clock hours/year) and standards set forth by the National Association for the Education of young children.
  • Cooperate with research activities by being aware of research activities scheduled for the classroom and by assisting researchers to develop rapport with the children in order to facilitate their willing participation.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    Possession of credentials required by Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for employment as a Child Care Worker in a licensed child care facility.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of NAEYC standards well as mandated state and local standards
    • Familiar with GOLD assessment tool
