Duties Under indirect supervision, to perform work requiring a moderate degree of skill in connection with the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment and to perform other related work; under direct supervision, to assist employees of higher classifications.
Make routine inspections of automotive equipment in accordance with standard inspection sheet and instructions; report abnormal conditions; tighten body and spring bolts; adjust horn and fan belt; check water hose connections. Make complete chassis lubrication on all types of automotive equipment, inspect for defects and worn parts; flush crank cases as assigned. Inspect, remove and replace equipment such as: water pumps, radiator cores, body hardware, fenders, gas tanks, mufflers and exhaust pipes, minor chassis parts, oil pans, batteries, battery cables, spark plugs, fan belts, lighting fixtures, windshield wipers and lamps. Operate battery charging equipment, properly noting and recording condition of battery before and after charging, time of charge, etc.; mark for repair batteries which cannot be charged. Make road service calls; make minor repairs or tow in disabled equipment. Inspect, test, clean and regap spark plugs. Replace or clean oil, gas or water filters. Make minor repairs on fenders, bumpers, light castings, upholstery, trim and bodies, including simple welding; perform incidental painting on vehicles. Operate traveling cranes, as assigned. Paint pole trailers, derricks, chassis and similar equipment. Maintain work equipment and area in a clean, orderly condition, continuously observe Company's safety rules and practices, check condition of safety equipment, attend scheduled safety meetings, participate in artificial respiration practice as required, and become familiar with safety manuals, rules and special procedures prescribed by the Company. Perform the duties of Automotive Mechanic Helper; perform other similar or less skilled work; direct and train men assigned to work with him.
Qualifications Must meet the Company's requirements as to General Qualifications; must have all the qualifications of Automotive Mechanic Helper and, in addition, have the following specific qualifications
Graduation from high school or applicable equivalent in either job training or study. Normally, one year or more of Company experience as Automotive Mechanic Helper, or the equivalent. Must have demonstrated ability in the performance of the duties of Automotive Mechanic Helper. Must be familiar with maintenance practices and procedures in use in the shop and be able to work from simple blueprints, drawings and sketches. Must have an elementary knowledge of the component parts of automobiles and trucks. Must have a working knowledge of lubricants and fuels. Must have acquired a working knowledge of the principles of simple welding. Must be familiar with the Company's safety policies and practices, know the effective, safe use and care of tools, equipment and materials common to the work and be alert in observing hazards and avoiding accidents. Must have demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious relations with other employees in the shop. Must have satisfactorily completed the Company's training course for the job of Automotive Mechanic "C" and have passed the promotional examination in connection therewith.

Thorough familiarity with and strict observance of the Company's safety policies and practices applicable to his job. The ability and willingness to meet customers and the public in a pleasant, tactful manner and to perform assigned duties in such a way as to best insure the maintenance of good public relations. Loyalty, in the best and appropriate sense of the word, to the interest of the Company, the public and fellow employees; and The characteristics of dependability, trustworthiness and carefulness and the ability to maintain harmonious relations with other employees; previous record in these respects must have been satisfactory.
Qualifications of Automotive Mechanic Helper:
Graduation from high school or applicable equivalent in either job training or study in automotive servicing or repair work. Some previous experience in automotive servicing or repair work desirable. Must be able to understand and follow instructions and to learn simple, routine procedures. Must be able to maintain harmonious relations with employees with whom his duties require contact. Must demonstrate aptitude for mechanical work. Must have an elementary knowledge of the correct, safe use and care of the hand tools used by mechanics. Must have a working knowledge of the safety precautions necessary in the work. Must possess an automotive vehicle operator's license and demonstrate ability to operate automotive equipment safely and satisfactorily.
