Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Research Scientist.The laboratory of Mia Petljak, PhD at NYU Grossman School of Medicine (petljaklab.com) is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join a multidisciplinary team investigating the cell-intrinsic and environmental causes of somatic mutations in human tissues, as well as their impact on cancer development and evolution. Building upon our foundational work (Cell, 2019; Nature, 2023; Nature Genetics, 2023), our team leverages mutational signatures, distinct genomic imprints left by individual mutagens on human genomes, to identify and characterize mutational sources. Through this approach, we aim to discover processes that cause and fuel cancer evolution, as well as aid in the development of innovative preventative and therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat it.

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will work independently, perform experiments, develop and optimize assays, and collect, analyze, interpret, and present data. Regular meetings with the Principal Investigator will ensure that you become an integral part of the research team, lead research projects, and get exposed to a wide range of cutting-edge technologies and techniques. You can expect to receive academic and IP credit for your efforts, including authorship on publications and patents, the ability to attend scientific conferences, present to various audiences, and gain exposure to experts across disciplines. You will be located with the Petljak lab in the new, state-of-the-art CURE facility at 345 Park Avenue South in the center of Manhattan.

Job Responsibilities:

Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity.

Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope.

Develops new ideas that promote current research. Exercises a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding extensive scientific research program and activities of outstanding novelty and/or importance.

Develops experimental designs, identifies and resolves technical problems, executes relevant experiments including but not limited to experiments in in vitro and in vivo models.

Develops research techniques, methodologies and/or protocols for the collection and quality of research data.

Ensures timely and accurate completion of research projects under their leadership and/or supervision.

As needed, supervises trainees and technicians and provides them with technical guidance and direction in the operation of various laboratory techniques and equipment as well as general laboratory practices and safety protocols.

Maintains a thorough knowledge of the advances in specialized fields through attendance of scientific conferences.

May coordinate the activity and experimental design between various labs, scientific staff, and collaborators.

May participate in writing and execution of grant proposals.

May make significant contributions to scientific papers. Is a resource/ author/ co-author for reports and presentations.

May provide recommendations for equipment purchases.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a PhD and 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates having a minimum of 3 years of post-PhD research experience and at least one first author research publication. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in any of the following: cancer biology; cell biology (including cell states such as senescence, stem cells, metabolism, stress and similar); broad experience in cell, molecular, microscopy, IF techniques.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $65,000.00 - $98,160.09 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
