At Bio-Rad, we advance science and save lives, together. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with the R&D Engineering Team in the Life Sciences Group, helping to prototype and test new ideas in digital PCR. The ideal candidate will rapidly design or modify existing circuits to drive opto-electronic components, and build breadboard prototypes for digital PCR fluorescence detection. They will design and execute experiments to demonstrate feasibility of the prototypes. Last but not least, there will be regular reports and presentations to stakeholders.

How You'll Make An Impact:



  • Work closely with the engineering team to prototype new light sources for fluorescence detection concepts for digital PCR.
  • Develop or modify electronic driver circuits for light sources, including LED and laser diodes.
  • Integrate and align optical components.
  • Develop and execute experiments to characterize various performance parameters. Capture procedures and results in detailed reports.
  • Present regular updates to the engineering team.


What You Bring:



  • Education: Current sophomore/junior university student in Electrical Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering or Optical Engineering.
  • 3.0 minimum GPA.
  • Understands basic analog circuits used to drive LEDs or Laser Diodes (constant current drivers), as well as photodetectors such as photodiodes (e.g. transimpedance amplifiers).
  • Hands on experience in prototyping circuits and small mechanical systems, including but not limited to Arduinos, Raspberry Pi, etc.
  • Experience planning and executing experiments, with attention to detail. Prior experience working in a lab or external internship.
  • Prior experience or coursework on fluorescence systems is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with lasers is a plus.

Compensation: The hourly range for this position is $25 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
