Department Information
Georgia Institute of Technology's Office of Technology Licensing (OTL), a unit under the Office of Commercialization, is seeking a creative and detail-oriented individual to serve as Business Development ManagerC ommercialization. This person will be responsible for marketing activities and interact with inventors and GT's licensing staff, fostering, and maintaining long-term relationships. Generating novel approaches to accomplish the goals of this position, integrating with the goals of the office is a key component of this position.
Job Summary
The Manager of Business Development is responsible for leading the development and execution of strategic initiatives that identify and secure funding opportunities to support the institution's research agenda. This role involves building and nurturing relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and philanthropic organizations, to foster collaboration and enhance research capabilities. By analyzing market trends and overseeing proposal development, the Business Development Manager ensures alignment with institutional priorities and drives successful funding outcomes.
Responsibilities
Job Duty 1 - Develop and execute comprehensive business development strategies to identify and secure funding opportunities that support the institution's research initiatives.
Job Duty 2 - Build and maintain strategic partnerships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, private industry, and nonprofit organizations, to enhance collaborative research efforts.
Job Duty 3 - Analyze market trends and funding landscapes to identify potential research partnerships and funding sources that align with the institution's research priorities.
Job Duty 4 - Lead the proposal development process by coordinating interdisciplinary teams, drafting proposals, and ensuring adherence to funding agency guidelines and institutional policies.
Job Duty 5 - Prepare and deliver detailed presentations and reports on business development activities, funding successes, and partnership outcomes to senior leadership and relevant committees.
Job Duty 6 - Monitor key performance indicators and evaluate the effectiveness of business development initiatives to inform strategic planning and resource allocation.
Job Duty 7 - Organize and facilitate outreach events, workshops, and networking opportunities to promote the institution's research capabilities and engage with potential funding partners.
Job Duty 8 - Provide expert guidance and training to faculty and researchers on grant writing techniques, proposal development, and effective engagement with funding organizations. Job Duty 9 - Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing performance, providing feedback, and making pay recommendations.

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements Bachelor's Degree in related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience Six or more years of relevant experience, including three or more years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications Certified Licensing Professional (CLP), Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP).
Preferred Educational Qualifications Master's Degree in related discipline; advanced certification may be preferred or required (some profiles may require additional education).
Preferred Experience Science-related Master's degree or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with the use of Sophia database, Flintbox, IN-PART, FirstIgnite, Google Patents (or equivalent), TradeSpace, LinkedIn and Monday.com
- Familiarity with social media management platforms such as Hootsuite or equivalent.
- Experience in working with/supervising student assistants/student workers.
- Experience working in an academic setting.
- Familiarity with University Technology Transfer
- Formal training or certification as a technical writer is a plus.
- Experience with mass mailing tools, BCC Reports and CRM tool such as SalesForce are also strong pluses.At least two years of relevant job-related experience in the field of marketing
- At least two years of experience in using social media for marketing
- Familiarity with the use of AI-based tools

Other Information
The selected individual will be responsible for independently and proactively developing strategies for marketing GT inventions, including ways to organize and track the activities involved and prepare necessary marketing materials. In preparation for marketing campaigns, the manager will identify potential licensees of GT inventions and licensing contacts within those licensees and actively communicate with those contacts. OTL uses several AI-based tools and other platform technologies to carry out marketing activities. Activities involve the use of specialized databases and tools to identify potential licensees to GT inventions and act as a resource to GT in finding industry partners. Create non-confidential marketing materials used to communicate with potential licensees and conduct marketing campaigns. The Manager will frequently interact o faculty, staff and graduate students, student assistants, potential licensees (industry contacts), licensing associates, directors, and external vendors. This position will advise and counsel Licensing associates, associate directors, and directors on matters relating to technology marketing. Role Specific Job Responsibilities include
- Project the image of OTL and GT within the business community, through social media, visually appealing digital compositions and other means.
- Develop marketing materials including nonconfidential summaries, social media posts, and short articles.
- Conduct marketing campaigns using diverse strategies (email, call, website posting, social media, etc.) and have primary responsibility for managing and carrying out active, direct marketing campaigns as well as recording and reporting outcomes.
- Work with licensing staff toward acquiring substantial knowledge of the GT invention portfolio to identify potential licensing targets.
- Aid Licensing Associates in interfacing with groups on campus to gather information helpful for targeted marketing activities.
- Create periodic marketing activity and outcomes reports and present these reports to OTL leadership.
- Assist in the management of databases and data entry including keeping record of marketing materials created, companies contacted, interactions with said companies and final outcomes.
- Updating OTL's corporate contact list.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
