Hiring Department TV Station Job Description Job Description: KOMU 8 News, mid-Missouri's NBC affiliate and the only university-owned commercial television station in the U.S., is looking for a dynamic, organized, and newsroom-savvy Assignment Editor to join our team. KOMU is a unique, hybrid newsroom where professional journalists work alongside some of the most talented student journalists in the country. We serve a 14-county region with a commitment to local news, weather, and sports and to accurate and ethical journalism in a digital-first newsroom. We're looking for a new team member who thrives on winning the big stories of the day while also mentoring students from the Missouri School of Journalism. Duties and Responsibilities: Monitor breaking news, scanners, press releases, tip lines, and social media to identify potential stories Assign stories and coordinate logistics with mangers, student reporters and producers Actively participate in and contribute to daily editorial meetings to refine coverage plans Maintain the daily and future story planning calendar Cultivate sources and maintain strong relationships with local agencies and community contacts Provide editorial guidance and support to student and professional journalists Help develop original, enterprise content ideas Other duties as assigned Shift The schedule for this position is still being formulated but is leaning toward hours that straddle both morning and early evening news broadcasts. Candidates must be flexible to work mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Preferred Qualifications Prior newsroom experience is preferred; student newsroom experience will be considered Strong editorial judgment and understanding of news value Excellent communication and the ability to multitask under deadline pressure A collaborative spirit and a genuine desire to mentor young journalists Passion for breaking news, community journalism, and innovation in storytelling If you are someone who....
