Description:

  • Perinatal sonographer functions as a medical imaging professional who has extensive understanding and knowledge of maternal and fetal anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
  • The sonographer provides clinically relevant ultrasound imaging to assist a licensed independent practitioner with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Skillfully perform routine and specialized sonography procedures of high complexity to produce quality images for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of high-risk obstetric patients.
  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with policies and procedures related to infection control and patient safety.
  • Verifies orders, verifies patient name/birth date and history. Review patient medical history and support clinical information, including but not limited to reviewing labs, medical records, previous ultrasounds, and any other relevant medical history.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic examination.
  • Use proper patient positioning tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and to prevent musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer.
  • Perform high-quality and technically complete detailed fetal anatomic surveys, fetal echo with measurements and cardiac Dopplers (PR Interval, Tricuspid valve, Mitral Valve), Doppler assessment of arterial and venous blood vessels (MCA, UA, DV,), nuchal translucency, fetal growth assessments, biophysical profiles, multiple gestations, twin to twin transfusion checks, and transvaginal cervical lengths and viability as outlined by nationally recognized organizations.
  • Prepare for and assist licensed medical practitioner in a variety of diagnostic and/or ultrasound guided procedures, including but not exclusive to, amniocentesis and chorionic villi sampling (CVS).
  • Performs and documents time out procedure for ultrasound guided procedures.
  • An adequate understanding of fetal anatomy to acquire additional ultrasound imaging of fetal anomalies to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.
  • Practice the ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) principle by adjusting controls that affect the acoustic output of the transducer, adjust power to the lowest available setting, and monitor the mechanical index (MI) and thermal index (TI) during the sonography examination.
  • Operate and adjust ultrasound machine settings to diagnostically scan technically difficult patients, including large BMI patients, exceeding BMI of 60+.
  • Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination.
  • Documents of all incidents related to patient care on electronic health records (example-incident reports, medications given, etc.)
  • Verifies images archived to and PACS/Viewpoint and notifies PACS administrator of any issues.
  • Review exam images, results, and document pertinent diagnostic imaging notes in Viewpoint and the electronic health record.
  • Communicate with the patient and their family in difficult and anxious settings in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand.

Qualifications for Ultrasound Technologist:

  • Associate degree.
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited education program in sonography or equivalent.
  • Current certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or eligible.
  • Must obtain ARDMS certification in Abdomen and OB-Gyn. If not certified upon hire, must obtain certifications within one year of hire.
  • Less than one year.
  • Current CPR for Healthcare Providers.
