You will earn an additional $2.00 per hour while actively working on sanitation or recycling routes, along with pay incentives for completing these routes ahead of schedule. The primary duties of this position include light to heavy manual labor, such as collecting refuse, recycling, and brush, as well as handling special pickups. Other responsibilities include serving as a municipal yard attendant at drop-off sites and operating large trucks and motorized vehicles with various capacities, as well as specialized equipment. Additional duties may consist of snow and ice operations, emergency work, hauling various materials, and completing seasonal tasks such as hot-tar crack filling, concrete work, asphalt maintenance and repair, using a Vac-All, and assisting other divisions as needed. The ideal candidate for this position is a positive individual who is comfortable using technology, adapts easily to shifting priorities within the department and the City, and can interact well with a diverse range of people, including City employees and the public. Examples of Duties
-
-Employees are responsible for loading and unloading trucks either by hand or using mechanical devices such as hoists, pumps, lifts, loaders, and winches. They perform emergency work of all types, including snow plowing and removal, as well as salt and sanding operations. Employees assist with job site operations, including street repairs, cleaning catch basins, operating tar kettles, performing asphalt patchwork, tarring patchwork, and spreading gravel. Additionally, they operate special-purpose equipment and collect, haul, and deliver a variety of materials, including combustible and non-combustible refuse, snow, leaves, brush, sand, gravel, stone, and salt.
-Transportation of personnel to various destinations within the city is also required. Employees are expected to maintain simple records and prepare reports, recommend changes to procedures and processes to enhance efficiency, and support initiatives such as strategic planning, Lean, and innovation.
-Maintaining prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance is essential, as well as providing truthful and accurate written and verbal communications. Employees must be capable of competently and credibly testifying in court and must lawfully operate designated motor vehicles at all times while performing their duties. They should be able to travel throughout and access all properties within the jurisdiction, adapting to the daily challenges of the job that require both mental and physical endurance.
-As needed, employees in this classification may be required to perform a variety of tasks beyond the duties of a Sanitation and Streets Crewmember, provided they are qualified. This offers opportunities for continuous learning and growth. Other duties may include general labor work, assisting residents with proper disposal, composting, or recycling of materials brought to the Municipal Yard site, general maintenance and repair of City-owned buildings and surrounding grounds, as well as performing other assigned duties.

Qualifications

Licenses and Certificates:
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license and acceptable driving record per City Policy.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (Class B, C, with air brakes).
- Possession of a Tanker (N) endorsement within 6 months of employment.
- All heavy equipment training will be provided on-site.
Education, Training, and Experience:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years of recent paid work experience operating trucks greater than 26,000 GVW, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and driving experience to demonstrate the necessary background.
- Recent paid work experience performing manual labor.
- Competent in using office computers and software, including Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.
- Completion of the National Incident Management System's (NIMS) ICS-100 and 700 training within 6 months of appointment.
- Must possess emotional intelligence, work ethic, accountability, and initiative.
Availability:
- Must be available to work nights, weekends, overtime, and at odd hours during emergencies, including occasional watch duty.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Good understanding of hazards and safety precautions in manual labor.
- Ability to work outdoors in changing and unpleasant weather conditions.
- Ability to work without close supervision.
- Good knowledge of laws and regulations governing truck operation.
- Ability to operate various trucks and automotive equipment safely under all weather conditions.
