GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW:
The Gene and Cell Therapy Institute (GCTI) is a newly created system-wide Institute under Mass General Brigham. The Institute will foster a world-class gene and cell therapy program that will leverage ongoing, groundbreaking scientific research efforts across the MGB system. The mission of GCTI is to bring together the community of MGB investigators which can utilize gene and cell therapy platforms to achieve their scientific and clinical goals and improve the health of patients. The Institute will differentiate itself by harnessing the exceptional strengths of clinician scientists, the large and unique patient population, and major discoveries throughout the hospital system to propel MGB as the leader in Gene & Cell therapies.
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Scientist to join our RNA Therapeutics team and participate in the development of novel RNA-based medicines and technologies. The candidate who fills this role will develop novel RNA technologies and produce high quality RNA preparations for experimental applications and external parties. They will design and execute rigorous screens to identify natural or synthetic sequences with potential technology applications, independently or in collaboration with partners. The successful candidate will have significant experience working in a research laboratory environment and be proficient in standard molecular biology techniques such as cloning, PCR, and electrophoresis. They would have hands-on RNA synthesis experience, be detail-oriented and organized, and eager to work in a team environment.

  • PhD with 3+ years of related experience in a life sciences laboratory role

  • Experience synthesizing and purifying RNA via in vitro transcription

  • Experience with molecular biology screening techniques

  • Ability to identify problems and troubleshoot solutions

  • Well-versed in laboratory standards and practices

  • Good organizational skills, detail oriented

  • Reproducibility of work with accuracy

  • Sound degree of computer literacy

  • Ability to methodically record data

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism

  • Dedication to excellence

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Experience managing direct reports

  • Broad knowledge of scientific principles, biological structures, and laboratory techniques

  • Computational or coding skills

  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing technology and data analysis

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop new RNA technologies to improve RNA synthesis, purification, protein expression, and function

  • Assess technologies in collaboration with other lab members or external partners in a variety of biological systems

  • Generate high quality circular RNA and mRNA using techniques such as in vitro transcription, silica purification, tangential flow filtration, HPLC, cloning, gel electrophoresis, plasmid outgrowth and purification

  • Perform analytical techniques and record quality metrics, with a strong focus on accuracy and reproducibility in work

  • Use universal safety precautionsand proper personal protective equipment to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials; complete requisite trainings as appropriate

  • Participate in lab meetings and generate ideas for improving efficiency and productivity in the lab's operations

  • Communicate effectively with the team, discuss progress, and share data with supervisors

  • Contribute to a positive work environment

  • Potentially manage one or more direct reports, assign tasks, and ensure high quality of work
