Job Description

This incumbent will provide assistance with the acquisition, preparation, and application of various types of equipment required for the Operating Room and delivery of anesthesia care. Incumbents are vital members of the team and are trained to anticipate the needs of the patient and the provider, according to the surgical requirements, procedure or circumstance.

Job Description
  • On a daily basis and in accordance with department standards, maintains and services all electronic and mechanical equipment used by Anesthesia Department personnel.

  • Sets-up transducers, calibrates and zeros monitors, as required

  • Assist in setting up OR suites with needed equipment and supplies.

  • Assembles pediatric and adult ventilator circuits.

  • Maintain sterile field in the procedure room.

  • Prepares procedural equipment such as the CVP, arterial line, Swan-Ganz and routine intravenous lines, as required.

  • Identifies malfunctioning equipment, troubleshoots equipment problems and refers more serious equipment problems to appropriate technical repair personnel when there are no established guidelines.

  • Assists in positioning and supporting patients for regional anesthesia procedures such as spinal and epidurals.

  • Supports the Anesthesia Provider during insertion of arterial catheter lines and internal jugular catheters.

  • Applies monitoring devices to the patient and operates all common physiological monitors (such as pulse oximeter, BP monitors cuffs, etc).

  • Removes and disposes of all relevant supplies and equipment following use, exchanging soiled for clean parts between cases and restocking room carts with supplies and drugs.

  • Assists in monitoring and ordering anesthesia-related supplies.

  • Cleans and decontaminates equipment per Sterile Processing Department protocols; this includes the disassembly of equipment and sterilization preparation in accordance with the Center for Disease Control guidelines to prevent the spread of infectious and contagious diseases.

  • Actively participates in quality control, quality assurance and preventative maintenance activities.

  • Assists in the evaluation of new products by providing feedback regarding use.

  • Attends and participates in equipment and supply in services, evaluations, and staff meetings.

  • Contributes in a positive manner to unit and department; supports team culture.

  • Maintains an effective working relationship with staff, managers, physicians, patients and their families.

  • Maintains a clean, safe work environment.

  • Practices aseptic techniques according to established standards of care and infection control policies, as required.

  • Prepares and maintains patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia.

  • Proactively uses the problem-solving process to identify, prevent or resolve inter-or intra-departmental problems.

  • Responsible for self-assessment of skill level and seeking resources to learn new skills, equipment, or procedures to maintain competency in position.

  • Supports administrative decisions and assures implementation and compliance with all department, institutional and regulatory policies and procedures.

  • Orients new staff members and students as required.

  • Assist with patient transport as needed.

  • Assists with blood and lab transport as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Two (2) years' work experience in a healthcare setting.

  • Understanding of the function and operation of various kinds of anesthesia equipment, preferred.

  • Previous experience as an anesthesia support staff, preferred.

  • American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians certification, preferred.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.

  • Must have the ability to communicate in English.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other incumbents of the organization.

  • An understanding of aseptic technique and infection control practices, preferred.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Ages of Patients Served - This position is responsible for the care of all patients based on unit specific standards.

Salary Range:

$35.07 - $43.46 USD Hourly
