ABOUT THE POSITION

Transportation Planner/Engineer - Project Manager | Tysons, VA

VHB's growing Metro DC operation is seeking a Transportation Planner/Engineer - Project Manager to join our Tysons Corner, VA Transportation Systems team. The selected candidate will work with VHB's passionate team of engineers, planners, and designers on a variety of projects across a broad cross-section of markets. This includes partnering with public and private clients at the federal, state, and local levels to improve mobility, enhance communities, boost economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.

This position is designed for a 5-8+ year professional with a strong technical foundation in transportation planning and traffic operations-and a desire to contribute to mentorship and project management for our Metro DC strategic initiatives, particularly in the local government market. You'll work closely with senior leadership, taking on key project responsibilities and supporting a balanced team structure and advancing our long-term business development goals.

Key Responsibilities

    Lead and support multimodal transportation projects including corridor studies, safety audits, and operations analyses
  • Conduct technical traffic engineering work using Synchro, SIDRA, HCS, MicroStation and VISSIM
  • Perform and manage safety-focused planning efforts
  • Support the development of transportation policies and programs for Virginia communities
  • Contribute to proposals, project scopes, budgets, and schedules
  • Serve as a task or discipline lead on multidisciplinary projects
  • Managing projects and staff on technical and professional growth
  • Prepare reports, planning documents, and client presentations
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support Metro DC strategic initiatives

Skills & Abilities

  • Take on increasing levels of responsibility as a transportation planning-focused Project Manager with business development capabilities
  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinker with a strategic, solutions-oriented approach
  • Technically proficient and detail-oriented with strong analytical skills
  • Familiar with Virginia-specific standards (VDOT, AASHTO, MUTCD, HCM, HSM)
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Proactive attitude and interest in future business development and leadership opportunities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field
  • 5-8+ years of experience in transportation planning/engineering (consulting preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • PTOE certification preferred
  • Proficiency with Synchro, HCS, MicroStation and VISSIM required
  • Familiarity with SIDRA, Cube/FSUTMS, GIS, and AutoCAD is a plus
  • Experience with Virginia transportation clients and agencies is strongly preferred
