The Layout Designer is responsible for document design and layout functions within the Strategic Campaigns and Pursuits Team and, as requested, in the Corporate Marketing and Communications Department. Some job functions include (but are not limited to) minor editing, design layout, photo color correcting, typeset and production of documents for publication using desktop publishing and graphics software applications, consulting with teams on project conceptualization and design.

Documents requiring layout include proposals, qualifications statements, Standard Form 330, and other miscellaneous layout requests as assigned.

This person designs and updates the layout document and publishes drafts, coordinates printing and production as well as other projects/documents as coordinated with the department. Primary work will be as part of a team, with high attention to detail, in a very fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The person must be able to initiate and act when required and must be able to respond to changes with both deadlines and goals. For successful performance, the person should adapt readily to, and be comfortable with change, both in terms of job activities and the work environment. Furthermore, this person should be comfortable with variety in their assignments and be able to cope with a number of priorities at any point in time.

Experience working within the principles of design and layout, effectively creating layouts with strong typography and appropriate use of color is required as are solid organizational skills, ability to multitask and manage multiple deadlines; strong communication skills; ability to troubleshoot problems and find solutions; and ability to follow direction. Initiative, self-organization, and deadline orientation are required.

Layout designers must be familiar with HDR's marketing and pursuit processes and are required to take all available marketing training.

The Layout Designer will report to the Strategic Campaigns and Pursuits Manager

Specific Job Responsibilities

Willingness to travel with a potential of 40% - 60% of time. Overtime and occasional weekend work will be required. A valid driver's license is also required for this role.

Document layout for medium to large qualifications packages and proposals, along with other documents as needed basis
Design of document templates/design guides
Coordination with graphic artists, other layout designers and marketing coordinators in a team-environment
Assist department staff with layout and production inquiries and file maintenance
Coordinate and/or produce documents in Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Word
When requested, job may include document editing, research, and occasional travel to the local office where project is being managed
Assist other Layout Designers with tasks as assigned
Use HDR systems to pull photos, resumes, and project descriptions

Other Job Responsibilities
Managing the Team's SharePoint Collaboration Site as well as other administrative functions such as creation of forms, training documents, archiving, and maintaining and updating procedures.
Maintain an in-depth understanding of HDR's brand including firm vision, mission, values and direction
Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel, as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of 1 year relevant industry experience
  • Experience with and interest in technology as it relates to documents and layout
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Excellent typing, spelling and proofreading skills
  • Demonstrated "self-starter"
  • Knowledge of production processes, both print and digital
  • Customer service, communication skills, flexibility, time management, project management, attention to detail, negotiation skills, leadership, multitasking and teamwork
  • Thorough knowledge of Adobe Suite (including, but not limited to InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat), Microsoft Word, and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Meticulous attention to visual design principles, fonts, and use of color
  • Ability to work with others and take constructive criticism and direction from a team
