About the Role
HOT JOB - IMMEDIATE OPENING! Culmen International is seeking a highly skilled industrial automation professional to support the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Radiation Portal Monitor Program (RPMP) within the Office of Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD). The RPMP Systems Engineering & Integration Lead will provide industrial instrument and automation programming technical expertise to CWMD's Radiation Portal Monitor Program, working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) to include field support during installation and commissioning at the site. This role is heavily centered around hands-on PLC and HMI programming, integration, testing, and field commissioning of automation systems critical to national security infrastructure. This is a remote/hybrid role with 70% travel in the domestic U.S. (TX, CA, WA, MI, SC, VA, FL, MS, NJ, and NY). The desired candidate will be required to commute to Bethesda, MD 20814 two (2) to three (3) times per month during the first three (3) months on-the-job for hands-on programming of the test bed equipment. This position is subject to 75% outdoor/25% indoor working conditions on-site in all elements of weather and land.
What You'll Do in Your New Role
Serve as the technical lead for PLC and HMI programming, configuration, and field troubleshooting across multiple active RPM sites
- Travel frequently (up to 70%) to field locations nationwide to perform site surveys, implement custom PLC / HMI logic, conduct system testing, and support commissioning activities
- Develop, implement, and maintain PLC / HMI programming templates in compliance with DHS system and cybersecurity standards
- Provide ongoing technical and training support to field-deployed PLC / HMI logic and networked control systems - supporting multiple project teams and concurrent deployments
- Lead the integration of gate arms, traffic lights, cameras, and sensors into programmable systems, ensuring full system interoperability
- Assign, configure, and test networked industrial devices (e.g., managed Ethernet switches, smart relays, energy meters ) within secure LAN environments
- Collaborate with engineering teams to iteratively design, update, and document PLC, HIM, and SCADA system architectures to support field operations and new use causes
- Work closely with project managers, construction leads, and senior technical managers to provide engineering guidance and resolve integration issues
- Use a detail-oriented, hands-on approach to support full life-cycle development - from testbed programming in Bethesda, MD, to field testing and commissioning
- Support the development of technical documentation, control diagrams, and reports for deliverables and audits
- Perform additional tasks as required to suppport project goals
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Industrial Control Systems, or a related field
- Ability to commute to Bethesda, MD 2-3 times per month during the first 3 months for hands-on PLC testbed development
- 8-10 years of experience in industrial automation with a strong focus on PLC and HMI programming, integration, and troubleshooting
- Proficient in PLC platforms including WAGO, Siemens, ABB, Beckhoff, IFM, and Delta
- Experience with programming environments such as CoDeSys, Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, and Allen Bradley's Studio 5000
- Skilled in HMI design and development for real-time operational environments
- Knowledge of fieldbus and communication protocols including EtherCAT, EtherNet / IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, DeviceNet, and CAN
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve field issues involving both hardware and software in complex, distributed systems
- Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills; capable of multitasking and meeting tight deadlines
- Proficient with MS Office Suite for documentation and reporting
